Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes looks to continue its winning ways and extend its two-match winning streak with a pair of matches in a four-day span. The Gray Wolves continue Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Siena Heights before playing their final non-conference tilt of the fall on Tuesday, hosting Olivet Nazarene at Wildcat Stadium.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over as the second head coach in program's history prior to the 2019 season. Johnson sports an 84-97-8 (.466) record overall in his 11th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 9-13 (.409) mark in his second year at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Lourdes leads the all-time series against Siena Heights 3-2 dating back to Oct. 24, 2015. The Gray Wolves have won two straight matches in the series, both by 1-0 scores, including last year's contest on Nov. 1 to end the season. This will be just Lourdes second trip to Adrian, Mich., having fallen to the Saints 3-2 in overtime during the 2017 campaign. Lourdes and Olivet Nazarene will be meeting on the pitch for the first time ever on Tuesday night.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Farouk Amoo started the scoring less than 10 minutes into the match and Lourdes never looked back last Saturday (Oct. 3), as the Gray Wolves defeated Cornerstone 3-0 in the WHAC opener.
Robert Pereznegron added a tally just before intermission while
Savio Adams tallied a second half goal.
Ali Chokr needed to make just one save in goal to earn the shutout as Lourdes outshot the Golden Eagles 12-8 on the night, including 8-1 on net.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints are still looking for their first victory in 2020 after falling 3-0 at home to Indiana Tech last Saturday to open their season and conference schedule. Siena Heights was outshot 29-1 in the opener, with Matheus Marrote tallying their only attempt. In goal, Andrew Kozan made eight saves while going the distance for the Saints. Siena Heights was picked to finished eighth in the WHAC this season.
Scouting Olivet Nazarene: The Tigers will be opening their 2020 season on Tuesday against the Gray Wolves. Olivet Nazarene went 9-7-5 one season ago and 6-4-2 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, tying for sixth place. Thomas Barboza, the Tigers' leading scorer from 2019 returns for his junior season after scoring 13 goals and handing out three assists for 29 total points. Mike Giannota is the team's only returning goalkeeper, having posted a 2.07 goals against average and a .692 save percentage in eight starts as a freshman.
Another WHAC Honor: Robert Pereznegron was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week following the Cornerstone win. The junior defender led a defense that limited the Golden Eagles to just one shot on goal, and eight total shot attempts, while scoring his first collegiate goal late in the first half to put the Gray Wolves in front 2-0. This was the second straight week Lourdes has earned WHAC Player of the Week honors as
Brendon Long and
Ali Chokr were named Offensive and Defensive recipients on Sept. 28.
Chokr Matches School Shutout Mark: Ali Chokr tied the Lourdes record with his seventh career shutout against Cornerstone last Saturday, matching the mark set by
Jose Cedillo (2015-2017). Chokr had two clean sheets as a freshman, three last year, and already has a pair in four starts this season.
Elsewhere on the All-Time Charts: Ali Chokr also ranks second in program history in minutes played in goal and saves. He is also 20:07 shy of qualifying for the career goals against average leaderboard. Chokr enters this week's action with 144 career saves, 30 shy of
Jose Cedillo's (2015-2017) mark of 174. Chokr is also approximately 800 minutes shy of Cedillo's minutes played mark of 3192:12
Moving Into the Top-10: Farouk Amoo and
Savio Adams moved into a tie for ninth all-time at Lourdes with five career goals after both found the back of the net against Cornerstone. The tally was Adams second of the year while Amoo scored for the first time in 2020.
Gray Wolf Debut: Gavin Quandt made his collegiate debut for Lourdes on Saturday against Cornerstone. He entered the match late in the second half.
Lots of Experience: Olawole Ogunsanya moved into second place alone in program history having appeared in 49 career matches after drawing a starting assignment in the season opener at Point Park. He trails only
Reece Riccardi (2016-2019), who appeared in 57 matches, on the Gray Wolves' all-time list.
Jose Silveira has moved into seventh all-time for the Gray Wolves, having stepped onto the pitch 41 times for Lourdes, four behind
Judah Goodridge's (2015-2017) sixth place mark.
Brendon Long is tied for third with
Riley Hogan (2015-2018) all-time at Lourdes having made 38 career starts.
A Different Look This Season: Due to COVID-19, five schools in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference have opted to not play soccer this fall, moving all of their matches to the spring. The remaining seven league schools will play a split season, competing in five WHAC matches in the fall and six in the spring. The WHAC tournament and NAIA National Championships will take place in the spring.
Team Captains: Lourdes has tri-captains for the 2020 season. Serving in the Gray Wolves' leadership role are seniors
Savio Adams and
Jose Silveira along with junior
Cameron Poslaiko. All three are first time captains for Lourdes.
This and That: Lourdes has had 23 different players step foot on the pitch already this year ... the Gray Wolves have started a season 3-1 for just the second time in program history (2016 started 5-0-1) ... Lourdes is looking to start WHAC play 2-0 for just the second time in program history (2017).
