Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes begins postseason play on Saturday afternoon as the seventh-seeded Gray Wolves take to the road for the quarterfinals of the WHAC tournament. Lourdes heads to Northwestern Ohio, the tournament's second seed, as the Gray Wolves make their second consecutive appearance in the postseason event.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over as the second head coach in program's history prior to the 2019 season. Johnson sports a 99-111-10 (.473) record overall in his 11th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 24-27-1 (.471) mark in his second year at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Northwestern Ohio holds a 7-0 series advantage all-time against Lourdes dating back to Sept. 26, 2015. The Racers won this season's first meeting between the two schools 4-1 on Oct. 20 at Wildcat Stadium. UNOH is 4-0 all-time against the Gray Wolves in Lima, Ohio. This will be the first meeting between Lourdes and Northwestern Ohio in the WHAC tournament.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes scored four times in the 20 minutes of the match on Wednesday (Oct. 27) as the Gray Wolves defeated Concordia (Mich.) 5-0 at Wildcat Stadium in the home finale.
Farouk Amoo had a goal and an assist while
Anthony Samuel,
Diego Pereira,
Hussein Sbeiti, and
Leon Eisert all scored for the Gray Wolves while
Igor Silva made one stop in the shutout. On Saturday (Oct. 30), Lourdes closed the regular season with a 3-2 victory at Cornerstone. Amoo added another goal and an assist while Pereira and Eisert also scored. Silva had two stops for Lourdes.
Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers enter the postseason unbeaten in their last nine matches (7-0-2) after defeating Siena Heights 6-0 on Saturday afternoon. Gustavo Moses leads Northwestern Ohio with seven goals this season while Moritz Guettel and Cameron Power each have six assists. Guettel has added five goals and leads the Racers with 16 points on the year. In goal, Rafael Lima sports a 1.14 goals against average and a .065 save percentage.
Lourdes in the WHAC Tournament: The Gray Wolves are making their third appearance in the WHAC tournament still in search of their first positive result.
This marks the first time that Lourdes has qualified for the postseason event in consecutive years. Last season the Gray Wolves dropped their quarterfinal match at home to Cornerstone 3-2.
A Record-Setting Season: The Gray Wolves have already assured themselves of matching the best record in program history. The nine wins equal the 2020 squad's school record for victories in a season. Lourdes finished 9-8-1 last year, the best winning percentage in program history.
Amoo Nets Second WHAC Honor of the Season: Farouk Amoo was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time after leading the Gray Wolves to a pair of victories last week. The senior scored against both Concordia (Mich.) and Cornerstone while adding an assist in each contest as well. He also earned WHAC Offensive Player of the Week honors back on Sept. 13.
Amoo Sets Career Scoring Mark: Farouk Amoo has now scored 24 goals over his four years with the Gray Wolves against Northwestern Ohio, moving him past Jake Kirchoff-Sleet (2015-2016) to the top the school's career scoring list. Kirchoff-Sleet finished his career with 21 tallies. Amoo now has 58 career points as well, passing Kirchoff-Sleet's old record of 52 points. Amoo tied Kirchoff-Sleet's career assist mark as well on Saturday against Cornerstone, and now has 10 career helpers entering the tournament.
Amoo Breaks Single Season Mark: With his 14th goal of the season against Cornerstone,
Farouk Amoo set the Gray Wolves' new single season goals mark. He passed Jake Kirchoff-Sleet's old school mark of 13 goals in 2016. Amoo's 33 total points also rank him first on the single season list, moving by Kirchoff-Sleet's 2016 total of 32 points.
Adams Moving on Up: Savio Adams has 11 career goals at Lourdes, fourth most in program history. He is eight goals behind Judah Goodridge (2015-2017) for third place on the all-time list. Adams also has 30 career points, fourth most all-time at Lourdes. Adams is also fourth on the career assist list with eight as well, one behind third place Akilla Arno (2015-2017), who had nine.
A High-Scoring Season: Lourdes has scored 38 goals this season, the second highest single season output in school history. The Gray Wolves set the school record in 2016 when they scored 63 times. Lourdes is also second in assists this season with 32, trailing the same 2016 team which finished with 40, while the 108 points are second behind the 2016 squad's 166 total points..
Lots of Matches: Olawole Ogunsanya has played in a school-record 72 matches during his time with the Gray Wolves.
Jose Silveira ranks second with 68 matches played.
N'Faly Diallo has set a new school mark with 53 career starts.
Robert Pereznegron has tied
Brendon Long (2018-2020) for second in school history. Each has been on the pitch 52 times at kickoff.
