Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes takes to the road for a pair of matches that will have key implications on the final Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings as two weeks remain in the regular season. The Gray Wolves head to Cleary on Thursday afternoon before heading to Aquinas for a Saturday evening contest.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over as the second head coach in program's history prior to the 2019 season. Johnson sports an 88-101-9 (.467) record overall in his 11th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has an 13-17-1 (.435) mark in his second year at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Cleary holds a 3-2 series advantage over Lourdes dating back to Sept. 12, 12015 and has won the last three matches between the two schools. The Cougars were 4-1 victors at Wildcat Stadium in 2019. The series is tied 1-1 in Howell, Mich. Lourdes and Aquinas have split five previous meetings 2-2-1 in a series that began Oct. 21, 2015. The Gray Wolves won the last contest between the two schools in 2019 by a 1-0 score at Wildcat Stadium. The Saints lead the series 2-0-1 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Wrapping Up Last Time Out: Leon Eisert put the Gray Wolves in front in the 12th minute on Saturday (March 20), but 12th-ranked Indiana Tech evened the match with just over 15 minutes to play in regulation as the two sides battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw.
Ali Chokr made five saves in goal for the Gray Wolves as the Warriors finished the match with an 18-12 shot advantage.
Scouting Cleary: The Cougars have dropped back-to-back matches after falling 2-1 at Northwestern Ohio on Tuesday (March 23). Benjamin Delage has scored both goals this season for Cleary while Dillon Splude has picked up the squad's lone assist. In goal, Juan Gomez has posted a 2.35 goals against average and a .754 save percentage for the Cougars.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints enter the week after suffering a 1-0 setback at Northwestern Ohio on Friday (March 19). Aquinas hosts Cornerstone on Wednesday before entertaining Lourdes. Theo Maye and Steffano Riley have each scored a team-leading four goals this season for the Saints while Maye also has three assists for a team-high 11 points. Fin Pittock shares the team lead with three assists as well. In goal, Antonio Strassioto has played every minute, sporting a 1.14 goals against average and a .724 save percentage.
First Collegiate Goal: Leon Eisert scored his first goal of his college career against Indiana Tech on Saturday. He is the Gray Wolves' ninth different goal scorer this season.
A Ranked Result: Lourdes earned just its second result ever against a NAIA top-25 program with the 1-1 draw versus 12th-ranked Indiana Tech on Saturday. The Gray Wolves are now 0-6-2 all-time against ranked foes, with the other tie coming against third-ranked Davenport by the same 1-1 score on Sept. 24, 2016.
Making Up Matches: Lourdes and Cleary are meeting on Thursday after their contest that was scheduled for March 17 had to be postponed. This is the second match that has been rescheduled this year, as the Indiana East contest from the fall got moved to the spring as well.
A Bunched Race: With two weeks remaining on the WHAC schedule, Lourdes is in a tie with Cornerstone for fourth place in the standings. The top four teams will host quarterfinal matches in the WHAC tournament. The Gray Wolves are just two points behind third place but only ahead of seventh as three points (the equivalent of one win) separate third through seventh places in the table.
Adams Ties Assist Mark: Savio Adams handed out his sixth assist of the season against Indiana Tech, tying Lourdes' single season record set by
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet during the 2016 campaign. His seven career assists are third most in program history.
Moving Up Single Season Charts: With four matches remaining on the schedule, this year's Lourdes squad already ranks fourth in program history with 20 goals and 56 points while ranking fifth with 16 assists. The two shutouts also are tied for fifth for a single season.
Chokr Matches School Shutout Mark: Ali Chokr tied the Lourdes record with his seventh career shutout this past fall, matching the mark set by
Jose Cedillo (2015-2017). Chokr had two clean sheets as a freshman, three last year, and already has a pair this season.
Elsewhere on the All-Time Charts: Ali Chokr also ranks second in program history in minutes played in goal, saves, and goals against average. Chokr enters this week's action with 168 career saves, six shy of
Jose Cedillo's (2015-2017) mark of 174, and his 1.88 career goals against average just trails Cedillo's all-time mark of 1.69. Chokr is also approximately 190 minutes shy of Cedillo's minutes played mark of 3192:12.
Lots of Experience: Olawole Ogunsanya has moved into second place in program history having appeared in 55 career matches. He trails only
Reece Riccardi (2016-2019), who appeared in 57 matches, on the Gray Wolves' all-time list.
Jose Silveira has moved into third all-time for the Gray Wolves, having stepped onto the pitch 50 times for Lourdes.
Brendon Long ranks second all-time at Lourdes having made 47 career starts. Riccardi holds the starts record as well with 48.
Team Captains: Lourdes has tri-captains for the 2020 season. Serving in the Gray Wolves' leadership role are seniors
Savio Adams and
Jose Silveira along with junior
Cameron Poslaiko. All three are first time captains for Lourdes.
This and That: Lourdes is now 2-7-6 all-time in overtime contests after the draw with Indiana Tech ... the Gray Wolves have tied the school record for wins in a season with seven, matching the 2015 squad.
