Box Score 2 Lourdes rallied to force extra innings in game one before Cleary prevailed 15-10, but the Gray Wolves rebounded with a 5-1 victory in game two on Saturday at Mercy Field.
After Cleary built a 2-0 lead in the opener, the Gray Wolves scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to take a two-run lead.
Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.) tied the game with a double and scored himself on a wild pitch before
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) connected on his fifth home run of the season.
The Cougars responded immediately with three in the top of the sixth before
Bryce Gargus' (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) sacrifice fly tied the game at five in the bottom of the inning. Cleary posted another three runs in the top of the seventh and added another in the ninth, taking a 9-5 lead to the bottom of the frame.
Lourdes batted around in the bottom of the ninth, with Childress delivering a sacrifice fly and
Devin Rooks (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) coming through with a two-run single with two outs.
Cord Noble (Rockford, Mich./Rockford H.S.) followed with a double that plated Rooks, tying the game. The Gray Wolves then loaded the bases but could not plate the winning run.
In the 10
th, Cleary scored six times, four of which were unearned. The Gray Wolves added a final run in the bottom of the inning as Childress was balked home.
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) had four hits in the opener for the Gray Wolves as the hosts pounded out 15 total for the game.
In game two
Jagger Geck (Algonac, Mich./Algonac H.S.) was the story, pitching eight innings allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five for the win (3-1). He did not allow a hit after the fourth inning.
Lourdes took the lead in the third on a
Josh Hare (Simcoe, Ont./Holy Trinity H.S.) RBI single. After Cleary (7-15, 1-3 WHAC) tied the game in the fourth, Hare was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to put the Gray Wolves back in front. An RBI groundout by Scott made it 3-1 in that same inning.
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) homered in the seventh and
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) reached on an error with a sacrifice fly that plated Lourdes final run in the eighth.
Cleary loaded the bases in the ninth before
Anderson Strunk (New Baltimore, Mich./Algonac H.S.) induced a line drive double play to end the game.
Jackson had three hits and scored three times in the nightcap.
Sunday's scheduled game at Rochester (Mich.) has been postponed until Tuesday due to wet field conditions in Rochester Hills, Mich. First pitch at Bill Shinsky Field is set for 1 p.m. With the make-up on Tuesday, the Gray Wolves' game at Huntington has been postponed at this time.
