Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes continues its season-opening road trip and looks to remain unbeaten as the Gray Wolves take the pitch for their first multi-match week of the season. Lourdes heads to Bethel (Ind.) on Wednesday evening before heading to Georgetown (Ky.) for a Saturday night affair.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over as the second head coach in program's history prior to the 2019 season. Johnson sports a 92-104-9 (.471) record overall in his 11th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 17-20-1 (.461) mark in his second year at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Bethel (Ind.) defeated Lourdes in the only previous meeting between the two schools, 3-0, at Wildcat Stadium on Sept. 5, 2018. The Gray Wolves will be meeting Georgetown (Ky.) on the soccer pitch for the first time in program history on Saturday.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Five different Gray Wolves found the back of the net last Wednesday (Aug. 25) as Lourdes scored four times in the second half on the way to a 5-0 victory over Indiana East.
Leon Eisert and
Robert Pereznegron each had a goal and an assist while
Hussein Sbeiti tallied the match-winning goal.
Farouk Amoo and
Ben Noud each scored as well for Lourdes.
Igor Silva made two saves in goal to earn the clean sheet.
Scouting Bethel (Ind.): The Pilots had their season-opening two-match winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 28) as Bethel fell 3-0 to seventh-ranked Saint Thomas. Matheus Santiago has scored three of the Pilots' four goals on the year and leads the squad with six points while Luan Bresy has also found the back of the net. Andre Sabino has Bethel's lone assist on the year. In goal, Finn Popescu has played every minute thus far, logging a 1.33 goals against average and a .733 save percentage.
Scouting Georgetown (Ky.): The Tigers opened their season with a convincing 5-1 victory at home against Oakland City on Aug. 22 and face Brescia on Tuesday (Aug. 31) before hosting Lourdes. Angus Taylor scored twice for Georgetown in their victory while Alessandro Carnicelli and Jake McKettrick each added a goal and an assist. Theren Handlon allowed one goal while making nine saves against Oakland City.
Eisert Named WHAC Player of the Week: Leon Eisert was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a goal and adding an assist in the win over Indiana East. The sophomore now has a team-leading three goals and seven points through the first two matches. Seven of his eight shot attempts have been on goal as well.
Nothing But Match Winners: Hussein Sbeiti has tallied the match-winning goal for the Gray Wolves in both the victory over Olivet Nazarene and Indiana East this season. In fact, all three of Sbeiti's career goals have been match-winners, as he also had the match-winning tally at Cleary on March 25, 2021.
First Career Clean Sheet: Igor Silva, who had played a total of eight seconds in his career prior to this season, has had a solid start in 2021. He earned his first career shutout against Indiana East, making a pair of stops, and now sports a 0.50 goals against average on the year. He has made five saves for a .833 save percentage.
Noud Tallies First Career Goal: Ben Noud found the back of the net for the first time in his career last Wednesday against Indiana East. The junior has appeared in 24 career matches and scored with three minutes remaining in the contest.
Solid Defense: The Gray Wolves limited Indiana East to just five total shot attempts last Wednesday. Only two of the attempts were on goal. For the season the Lourdes defense has limited the opposition to six total shots on goal.
Longest Road Trip in Program History: Lourdes opens the 2021 regular season with five consecutive matches away from home, the longest road trip in program history. The Gray Wolves previously played four consecutive road contests from Oct. 7-18, 2017, dropping all four matches played during the trip.
Lending a Helping Foot: Andris Klempert handed out his second assist of the season against Indiana East to take the team lead. The junior now has six for his career, matching teammate
Farouk Amoo and Adilson Darosa (2015, 2017) for fourth place on the Gray Wolves' career assist list.
Lots of Experience: Olawole Ogunsanya enters the week as the school record holder for matches played, having appeared in 62 contests over his first four years with the Gray Wolves.
Jose Silveira ranks third all-time at Lourdes with 56 appearances, one behind second place Reece Riccardi (2016-2019).
Robert Pereznegron enters the week fifth on the all-time list with 51 career matches played. Pereznegron also is tied with Judah Goodridge (2015-2017) for third all-time with 41 career starts.
In the Record Books: With his goal against Indiana East,
Farouk Amoo passed Reece Riccardi (2016-2019) for third all-time at Lourdes with 11 career goals. He is eight goals behind second place Judah Goodridge (2015-2017). Amoo is also third with 28 career points, 15 behind Goodridge for second.
Gray Wolves Tabbed Fifth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in fifth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. The Gray Wolves were picked just behind fourth place Madonna. Indiana Tech was the unanimous selection to win the league crown.
This and That: Lourdes has a 38-58-6 all-time record ... the Gray Wolves are 22-31-1 all-time on the road ... 20 of Lourdes 38 shot attempts in the season opener were on goal.
