Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: The non-conference portion of the 2021 men's soccer schedule comes to a close on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Goshen at Wildcat Stadium to conclude a two-match homestand. Lourdes will then have 10 days off prior to the opening of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Sept. 25.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over as the second head coach in program's history prior to the 2019 season. Johnson sports a 94-106-9 (.471) record overall in his 11th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 19-22-1 (.464) mark in his second year at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Goshen leads the all-time series against Lourdes 2-0 dating back to Sept. 8, 2018. The Maple Leafs won the last meeting between the two schools on Sept. 4, 2019, 1-0, in Goshen, Ind. The inaugural meeting in 2018 was the lone match played at Wildcat Stadium, a 6-1 Goshen victory.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Holy Cross (Ind.) scored the match-winner just 41 seconds into the second half on Tuesday (Sept. 7) as the Saints downed Lourdes 2-1 in a contest that began on the Holy Cross campus and was moved in the 10th minute following a lightning delay.
Hussein Sbeiti scored the lone goal for the Gray Wolves while
Farouk Amoo and
Diego Pereira drawing the assists.
Igor Silva made three saves in goal. In Saturday's (Sept. 11) home opener, Amoo tallied a hat trick and
Kevin Gonzalez and
Diego Pereira each found the back of the net in a 5-0 victory over Point Park. Silva made two saves on his way to the clean sheet.
Scouting Goshen: The Maple Leafs are winless (0-1-2) in their last three matches following a 3-1 setback at home against Siena Heights on Saturday (Sept. 11). Lucas Bontreager leads Goshen with three goals and two assists for eight points while Lars Razor has three tallies and seven points. Felipe Gallo and Lucas Vilela have each handed out a pair of assists as well. In goal, Matias da Fonseca has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 0.92 goals against average and a .750 save percentage.
Amoo Earns WHAC Honors: Farouk Amoo was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three times and adding an assist against Holy Cross (Ind.) and Point Park. He is the second Gray Wolf this season to earn the accolade, following
Leon Eisert's honor on Aug. 30.
Second Career Hat Trick: Farouk Amoo's hat trick against Point Park was the second of his career. The Gray Wolf forward also scored three times in the spring at Cleary on March 25, 2021. The hat trick against the Pioneers was the ninth in program history. Amoo joins
Darius Passley-Bennett as the only Lourdes players ever to record more than one hat trick during their Gray Wolf career.
A Winning Non-Conference Slate: Lourdes has assured itself a winning record in non-conference play for the first time since 2016 when the Gray Wolves opened the pre-WHAC schedule with a 5-0 record. Lourdes went .500 (2-2-1) in non-league action in 2017 as well.
A Battle for the Scoring Lead: The top of the scoring race for the Gray Wolves is a crowded one through six matches.
Farouk Amoo,
Leon Eisert, and
Hussein Sbeiti all have found the back of the net three times for Lourdes while
Diego Pereira has three goals.
Handing Out Assists: Andris Klempert and
Farouk Amoo share the team lead with three assists each this season. A total of 12 different Gray Wolves have dished out at least one helper through the first six contests.
A Mainstay in Goal: Igor Silva, who had played a total of eight seconds in his career prior to this season, has had a solid start in 2021. He has played all 540 minutes between the posts this year for the Gray Wolves and now sports a 1.17 goals against average on the year. He has made 19 saves for a .731 save percentage.
Mixing Up the Lineup: Lourdes has used a variety of combinations in their starting 11 this year. A total of 17 different players have drawn at least one starting assignment, with only
Kevin Gonzalez,
N'Faly Diallo, and
Igor Silva earning the starting nod in all six matches.
Into the Single Season Books Already: As a team, Lourdes has scored 18 goals through six matches this year, a total that has moved the 2021 squad into fifth place in program history for most goals scored in a year. The Gray Wolves just passed the 2019 team that scored 17 goals. The 18 assists are tied with the 2015 team for fourth in school history while the team's 54 points to date ranks the Gray Wolves fifth on the single season charts in that category as well.
Team Captains: Savio Adams,
Cameron Poslaiko, and
Jose Silveira are serving as the Gray Wolves' captains for the second straight season.
Lots of Experience: Olawole Ogunsanya enters the week as the school record holder for matches played, having appeared in 66 contests.
Jose Silveira is second all-time at Lourdes with 59 appearances.
Robert Pereznegron enters the week fourth on the all-time list with 54 career matches played. Pereznegron also is third all-time with 44 career starts.
Gray Wolves Tabbed Fifth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in fifth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. The Gray Wolves were picked just behind fourth place Madonna. Indiana Tech was the unanimous selection to win the league crown.
This and That: Lourdes has a 40-60-6 all-time record ... 13 different Lourdes players have registered at least one point this season with seven scoring goals ... the Gray Wolves have yielded just one goal in the opening 45 minutes of action.
