Lourdes Opens Season in Successful Fashion at Patriot Open

Final Results

Lourdes had 10 wrestlers post a top-six finish on Saturday as the Gray Wolves opened the 2022-2023 season at the Pepsi Patriot Open hosted by Cumberlands (Ky.) at the Coban Civic Center in Corban, Ky.

The event was divided into two brackets per weight class, one for freshmen and sophomores and the other the open division for upperclassmen.

"This was a very good start to the season for us today," head coach Dock Kelly III said afterwards.  "The Patriot Open is a top-level tournament.  Our freshmen all wrestled well in the freshman/sophomore division and Will Speight (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) did a great job wrestling back to place third in the open division.  I have to give credit to Coach Piszker and Coach Jackson for doing an awesome job of training and preparing the team for this tournament.  The team was absolutely ready to compete, and it showed from the first whistle."

Three Gray Wolf freshmen finished in the top-six of the 125-pound weight class.  Trevor Hisey (St. Mary's, Ohio/Memorial H.S.) defeated teammate Nick Rodriguez (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.) in third place match in a 4-2 decision.  Hisey scored three falls in his collegiate debut, winning five matches in all.  Rodriguez tallied three wins, two by major decision.  Tyler Hisey (St. Mary's Ohio/Memorial H.S.) also finished six in the weight class.

Cole McKinley (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) notched a third place finish at 133 pounds in his collegiate debut.  He scored a fall in the third place match just 1:10 into the contest, one of two he had on the day.  He also recorded a tech fall among his five victories.

At 141 pounds, Landon Engle (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) finished fourth, falling by tech fall in the third place match.  He recorded five wins in his debut, including two via pins.  Evan Perry (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) also finished fourth at 157 pounds.  He lost in a narrow 6-5 decision in the third place match.  Perry had four wins on the day, including three by way of falls.

Dominico Migliori (Curtis, Ohio/Clay H.S.) and Jake Badgeley (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington H.S.) finished third and fourth respectively at 174 pounds.  Migliori defeated his teammate in the third place match in a 3-2 decision, giving him four wins on the day, including three via falls.  Badgeley had three wins, including one pin.

Speight recorded a third place finish in the open 184-pound weight class.  He scored a 9-4 decision in his third place match.  After falling in match one, he tallied six straight wins, including two by fall.  Carter Kroll (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario H.S.) was the only other Gray Wolf to post a top-six finish in the open division, doing so at 197 pounds.  Kroll finished fifth.

"We look forward to making some necessary corrections and preparing for our WHAC opener on Tuesday," Kelly concluded.

Lourdes will open the dual portion of its schedule at home on Tuesday evening, hosting Cleary.  The first bout is slated for 7 p.m.
