Final Results
Nick Henneman (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) remained undefeated on the season, capturing the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title at 141 pounds on Saturday, helping lead Lourdes to a third place finish as a team inside of the Schaefer Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The Gray Wolves finished the day with 129 points, trailing just champion Indiana Tech's 173 points and runner-up Marian's 164.5 points. Cornerstone was fourth with 64 points.
"This was a tough qualifying tournament, and we had some golden opportunities that we failed to take advantage of," head coach
Dock Kelly III said afterwards. "I'm proud of the way that several of our guys battled through the adversity and punched their ticket to the national tournament."
Henneman, ranked second in NAIA, began his day with a quarterfinal pin just 1:21 into the contest before needing a late takedown in the semifinals to defeat Marian's Aundre Beatty 10-9. In the title contest against 16
th-ranked Logan Wagner of Marian, Henneman evened the match with just 13 seconds remaining on a takedown then won in overtime with a takedown for the 7-5 sudden victory.
Lourdes had three WHAC runner-up finishes as well on the day as
Richard Jackson (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.),
Noah Clary (Upper Sandusky, Ohio/Upper Sandusky H.S.), and
Alec Moore-Nash (Price Hill, Ohio/Elder H.S.) placed second in their respective weight classes. Jackson scored a semifinal fall late in the opening period at 165 before dropping his title bout 7-4. Clary notched a shutout, 6-0 in the semifinal before dropping a 5-1 decision in the 174-pound championship. Moore-Nash scored a first period fall in the quarterfinals and earned a 6-3 decision over 16
th-ranked Braydon Erb of Indiana Tech in the semis before falling 6-2 in the title tilt.
Will Speight (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) battled for a third place finish at 184 pounds. He started the day with a fall early in the third period of the quarterfinals before dropping a semifinal contest 6-2. In his third place match, Speight was a 21-5 winner by technical fall in the middle stanza.
Alex Slattman (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon H.S.) was the only other Gray Wolf to win multiple matches on the day. He placed fourth at 125 pounds, notching a fall in the quarterfinals as well as another pin in the consolation semifinals.
"This was a great group of guys to work with all year long, and we are looking forward to competing well at the national tournament in a few weeks," Kelly added.
Lourdes will now await the official announcement from the NAIA to determine the total number of qualifiers for the NAIA National Championships which will take place in Wichita, Kan. March 4-5.
