Nick Henneman (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) earned NAIA All-American accolades for the third time in his career while
Blake Montrie (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) and
Noah Clary (Upper Sandusky, Ohio/Upper Sandusky H.S.) both reached the round of 12 as Lourdes opened action at the NAIA National Championships on Friday at Hartman Arena in Park City, Kan.
As a team, Lourdes is in 19
th place in a field of 62 schools heading into the final day of competition having scored 19 points. Grand View is the team leader with 123.5 points followed by Life with 90 points.
Henneman, the tournament's second seed at 141 pounds, started quickly, registering a 16-0 tech fall over Joseph Rice of Missouri Valley. The fifth-year senior then suffered his first setback of the season, dropping a 6-5 decision against Cade Manion of Oklahoma City. Henneman bounced back in the consolation draw, downing Jayce Cunha of Embry-Riddle. In his fourth bout of the day against Dawson Bates of Reinhardt, Henneman scored a takedown in the final 10 seconds to earn a 6-5 decision. He closed the night in the All-American round with his third tech fall of the day, a 16-1 triumph over Theorius Robison, the fourth seed, from Jamestown.
Montrie had numerous close matches on the day at 149 pounds. He dropped his opener 5-4 to 11
th-seeded Nick Souder of Williams Baptist before battling back in the consolation bracket. Back-to-back overtime wins, both by 3-1 scores, moved him along. He began defeating Beau Blackham of Embry-Riddle before upsetting top-seeded Cole Luallen of Reinhardt. A 5-2 decision over ninth-seeded John Diener of Morningside put him in the round of 12, where Montrie's run came to an end with a 7-3 loss to seventh-seeded Keegan Luton of Oklahoma City.
Clary also had to battle back after an opening round setback at 174 pounds. He was pinned with four seconds left in his opening bout against sixth-seeded Cole Tenety of Reinhardt. He then pinned Jarod Swank of Cumberlands (Ky.) just 1:14 into the contest before notching a 7-1 decision over 12
th-seeded Michael Scarpoini of Doane. A 6-4 decision against Michael Abidin of Saint Thomas sent Clary to the round of 12 where he was defeated by seventh-seeded Stephen Kelle of Southeastern 7-2.
Richard Jackson (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) had a solid championship. He opened with an upset of the 165-pound second seed, Syd Ohl of Life, with a 4-2 sudden victory. After falling in a 9-2 decision to Matt Jenkins of Reinhardt sent him to the consolation bracket, Jackson scored a pin of Jayden Terronez of Saint Ambrose with just three seconds remaining in regulation. His tournament run came to a close though, as Chandler Woenker of Campbellsville registered a first period fall in the evening session.
Alec Moore-Nash (Price Hill, Ohio/Elder H.S.) concluded his career with the Gray Wolves as a three-time NAIA national qualifier. He faced the top seed at 285 pounds from Grand View, Greg Hagen, in the opening round, falling in a 15-1 major decision. In the consolation draw, he saw his tournament run end with a 10-4 decision loss to Gabe Craig of Campbellsville.
At 184,
Will Speight (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) made his national debut. He battled fourth-seed Sam Osho tight, falling 5-3, in the opening round before dropping a 9-5 match to Thomas Culp of Lincoln.
Henneman will return to the mat for the final time on Saturday, looking to improve upon his 22-1 record with a chance to finish as high as third place. Action begins at 11 a.m. EST inside of Hartman Arena.
