Box Score Lourdes battled back from an early two-run deficit to defeat Campbellsville 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in a game called in the sixth inning due to thunderstorms.
"We got another strong start today," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. "I thought Jake pitched very well, without his best stuff. We tell our pitchers to give us a chance to win the game and that's what he did. He competed and kept us in it until we were able to get a couple of runs late."
The Tigers scored first, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the second inning. Lourdes answered with a single tally in the third as
Steve Haugh (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) up the middle to score
Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.), cutting the lead in half.
Jake Boyd (West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson H.S.) kept the Gray Wolves in the contest, working 4.2 innings, while allowing just two hits.
Lourdes broke through in the fifth, as Scott had a RBI single up the middle to tie the game and Haugh put the Gray Wolves in front with a double to center.
The Gray Wolves maintained the lead into the bottom of the six, when the stopped was called with one out in the bottom of the inning due to lightning, with heavy rain following which ended the game.
Scott and Haugh each had two of the Gray Wolves' seven total hits in the game.
Boyd earned the win while
Braden Zuber (Payne, Ohio/Wayne Trace H.S.) picked up the save.
With the heavy rain, Monday's final game of the series has been cancelled. Lourdes (7-4) is now slated to return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Barbourville, Ky. to face Union (Ky.). First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Jerry Carter Stadium.
