Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: Lourdes, winners of 10 of its last 11 games, takes its four-game winning streak on the road this weekend. The Gray Wolves continue Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action with a doubleheader at Madonna on Saturday afternoon before traveling to Concordia (Mich.) on Sunday for a twinbill.
Head Coach Josh Bradford: In his third season in the Lourdes dugout,
Josh Bradford has a 43-40 (.518) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach. He is the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Probable Starters: Wyatt Smith (RHP, 1-1, 3.78) and
Bryn Biemiller (RHP, 0-1, 6.39) are the probable starters for the Gray Wolves on Saturday afternoon against Madonna. Sunday's starters at Concordia (Mich.) have yet to be determined.
Series Notes: Madonna holds a 28-1 all-time series edge against Lourdes dating back to March 31, 2012. The Crusaders have won the last 20 meetings between the two schools after sweeping last season's doubleheader 10-6 and 15-4 at Mercy Field. Madonna is 13-1 against the Gray Wolves in Livonia, Mich. Concordia (Mich.) is 22-10-1 all-time against Lourdes in a series that began April 13, 2012. The Cardinals have won the last three meetings between the two schools after taking both ends of a doubleheader at Mercy Field last season 10-4 and 7-1. Concordia holds a 9-6-1 edge in games played in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes swept a non-conference doubleheader against Grace Christian in record-setting fashion on Thursday. The Gray Wolves won the opener 33-2 before posting a 10-3 victory in the nightcap.
Brad Ammons went 6-for-6 with four RBI in game one while
Zack Mon drove home three runs in the second contest. On Tuesday,
Caleb Loboschefski tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and
Ryan Jagodzinski went 2-for-3 as Lourdes downed Rochester (Mich.) 3-1 in the opener. In game two,
Joey Oehlers threw seven shutout innings allowing just two hits while
Steve Haugh and Ammons drove in three runs in a 10-0 victory.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders had their eight-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Northwestern Ohio. Jace Matkin leads Madonna batting .476 with seven home runs and 26 runs batted in. The Crusaders pitching staff sports a 5.14 earned run average and batters are hitting .246 against them on the season.
Scouting Concordia (Mich.): The Cardinals enter the weekend having split a doubleheader at Indiana Tech on Tuesday afternoon. Concordia hosts Siena Heights on Saturday before entertaining Lourdes on Sunday. James Wressel leads Concordia batting .402 with 29 runs batted in while Aaron West has six home runs and 28 RBI. The Cardinals pitching staff sports a 5.64 earned run average on the year and has allowed opponents to hit .270 against them.
Schedule Updates: The Lourdes-Cleary doubleheader that was postponed on March 26 has been rescheduled. The Gray Wolves and Cougars will meet at 1 p.m. on April 15 at Mercy Field.
Ammons Named WHAC Player of the Week: Brad Ammons was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Player of the Week after he went 7-for-8 (.875) at the plate against Grace Christian. He had four doubles, five runs scored, five runs batted, and a .900 on base percentage after being hit by a pair of pitches. Ammons went 6-for-6 with four doubles, and was hit by a pitch in game one.
Record-Setting Win: Lourdes set a school record with the 33 runs in the opening game of the twinbill against Grace Christian. The Gray Wolves surpassed their previous record of 27 runs scored in a 27-1 victory over Goshen on April 6, 2021.
Solid Starts: Lourdes starting pitchers have yielded just one run and five hits over the last three games.
Spencer Rader tossed two innings of shutout baseball without allowing a hit while striking out four in game two against Grace Christian.
Caleb Loboschefski went the distance in the opener against Rochester (Mich.), allowing just one run on three hits while fanning nine.
Joey Oehlers worked seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing two hits while striking out seven in game two against the Warriors.
Streaking: Steve Haugh has reached base safely in each of the last 10 games he has played for the Gray Wolves. He had a 12-game on base streak earlier this season, having played just one game this year in which he has not been on the base paths successfully.
Joey Oehlers enters the weekend with the team's longest hitting streak, having registered hits in each of his last six appearances.
Gray Wolves Tabbed Ninth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was picked to finish ninth in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference in the 2022 preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. The Gray Wolves were slotted just behind Aquinas and just ahead of Cleary. Northwestern Ohio was tabbed as the preseason favorite.
This and That: Lourdes has drawn 107 walks over the course of the first 24 games this year while also being hit by 32 pitches ... the Gray Wolves have committed just 23 errors, less than one per game, fielding at a .967 clip ...
