The Lourdes esports team captured the inaugural Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title in Overwatch on Saturday afternoon, defeating Lawrence Tech 3-0 in the semifinals before downing Indiana Tech 4-0 in the title match inside the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
Following a quarterfinal bye, as the top overall seed, the Gray Wolves met fifth-seeded Lawrence Tech in the semis. The match started out on Lijiang Tower where some stellar damage play by
TJ Dennis (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center H.S.) led to a 2-0 win. Â Next up, the Gray Wolves faced the Blue Devils on King's Row in which a strong defensive hold allowed Lourdes to finish the map quickly with a 1-0 victory. Â The final map in the series was Dorado. Â This round really showcased the freshman talent of
Jackson Austin (Louisville, Ky.),
Drew Junion (La Grange, Ky./North Oldham H.S.),
Johnell Dukes (Warren, Ohio/LaBrae H.S.), and
Christopher Smith (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue HS.) as they lead the team to another full defensive hold, taking the map 1-0.
Â
The grand finals saw Lourdes facing off against Indiana Tech, the one team able to take a map off the Gray Wolves in the regular season. Starting on Nepal, the Gray Wolves stifled the Warriors, not letting a single percentage be taken on either of the points and winning 2-0. Â Indiana Tech decided to take the match to Numbani for the following map. Â Initially the Warriors found a little bit of success, but a great quintuple kill by
Brenden Marsden (Columbia, Mo./Hickman H.S.) led Lourdes to a 2-1 victory. After that, the Gray Wolves closed out the series winning 1-0 on Junkertown and 2-1 on Hanamura to capture the title.
