Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: After being idle for two weeks, Lourdes returns to the pitch on Saturday evening riding a two-match winning streak. The Gray Wolves will welcome Cornerstone to Wildcat Stadium to open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over as the second head coach in program's history prior to the 2019 season. Johnson sports a 101-116-11 (.467) record overall in his 12th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 26-32-2 (.450) mark in his second year at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Cornerstone have split their eight previous meetings 4-4 in a series that began Oct. 28, 2015. The Gray Wolves last year's match in Grand Rapids, Mich. 3-2 to conclude the regular season. The Golden Eagles hold the advantage at Wildcat Stadium though, holding a 3-1 edge on the Gray Wolves' home pitch.
Wrapping Up Last Week (or Two Weeks Ago): Jonas Kreutzberg scored the lone goal of the match in the 31st minute on Sept. 7 as Lourdes notched its first victory of the season 1-0 at home against Holy Cross (Ind.).
Alex Brock was credited with the shutout as the defense yielded just two shot attempts, none of which were on goal. On Sept. 10,
Diego Pereira scored just 13 seconds into the contest and Kreutzberg added the eventual match-winner in the 61st minute as the Gray Wolves defeated Point Park 2-1 at home. Brock made four saves in goal to earn the victory.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday evening, dropping a 3-0 decision at 14th-ranked Bethel (Ind.). Tyler Corstange leads Cornerstone in scoring this season with six goals and 14 total points. Jeff Herrema is the Golden Eagles leader in assists with four and has six total points on the year. In goal, Ethan Pike has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 1.14 goals against average, an .838 save percentage, and notched two shutouts.
Lourdes in WHAC Openers: Lourdes is 4-2-1 all-time in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference openers. The Gray Wolves have won four of their last five league openers after downing Siena Heights 4-2 on the road to begin conference play in 2021. Lourdes is 1-1-1 when opening the league slate at Wildcat Stadium.
Now That's a Fast Start: Diego Periera scored the fastest goal to start a match in program history against Point Park. The junior needed just 13 seconds to find the back of the net and give the Gray Wolves a 1-0 lead against the Pioneers on the way to a 2-1 victory. The previous quickest goal to start a contest was by Judah Goodridge, who needed just 1:20 to score against Great Lakes Christian on Sept. 7, 2016.
Scoring Winners: Jonas Kreutzberg's first collegiate goal proved to be the match-winner against Holy Cross (Ind.) on Sept. 7 in the 1-0 victory of the Saints. The sophomore waited just three more days for his second tally, which also was a match-winner, in the win over Point Park.
Surpassing 100: Head coach
Matt Johnson won his 100th game of his collegiate coaching career on Sept. 7 with the 1-0 victory over Holy Cross (Ind.). Johnson is currently in his 12th season overall and now sports a 101-116-11 career mark.
Mirlach Takes Team's Assist Lead: Daniel Mirlach had not registered a point in his collegiate career prior to the Holy Cross (Ind.) match on Sept. 7. He then garnered his first career assist on the match-winner against the Saints before adding his team-leading second helper of the year three days later on the quick first goal versus Point Park.
That's a Lot of Matches: Robert Pereznegron has passed teammate
N'Faly Diallo's school mark for career starts, entering the week with 58 and also tied with
Jose Silveira (2017-2021) on the all-time matches played list with 70 appearances. Diallo is second all-time at Lourdes with 56 career starts during his time at Lourdes. He also is fourth with 69 career appearances, one behind Silviera and Pereznegron for second.
In the Record Books: Darius Passley-Bennett and
Leon Eisert are tied for eighth all-time with seven career goals. They trail Haggi Amirally by one goal for seventh on the all-time charts. Eisert is also tied with Akilla Arno (2015-2017) for third with nine career assists. He is one helper shy of the school mark held by Jake Kirchoff-Sleet (2015-2016) and
Farouk Amoo (2018-2021).
Andris Klempert ranks sixth on the career assists list with seven, needing one more to match
Savio Adams (2018, 2020-21) for fifth in school history.
More Top Performances: Leon Eisert is currently tied for fifth with Reece Riccardi (2016-2019) with 23 career points.
Darius Passley-Bennett is tied for 10th on the list with Akilla Arno (2015-2017), each tallying 17 points.
Hussein Sbeiti has three career match-winning goals, tied for third most in program history. Sbeiti is one match-winner shy of Judah Goodridge's (2015-2017) second place mark of four.
Gray Wolves Tabbed Sixth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in fifth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. The Gray Wolves were picked just behind fifth place Madonna. Indiana Tech was the unanimous selection to win the league crown.
