Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes wraps up the non-conference portion of its 2022 schedule this week with a pair of home matches. The Gray Wolves will entertain Holy Cross (Ind.) on Wednesday afternoon before welcoming Point Park to Wildcat Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over as the second head coach in program's history prior to the 2019 season. Johnson sports a 99-116-11 (.462) record overall in his 12th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 24-32-2 (.431) mark in his second year at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Holy Cross (Ind.) has won both previous meetings against Lourdes in a series that began Feb. 8, 2021. Last season, the Saints notched a 2-1 win over the Gray Wolves in Notre Dame, Ind. This will be the first meeting at Wildcat Stadium as the initial meeting was played indoors in Rossford, Ohio. Lourdes holds a 2-0 series advantage against Point Park dating back to Sept. 12, 2020. The Gray Wolves won last year's meeting 5-0 at Wildcat Stadium.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Anthony Samuel scored the lone goal of the match for Lourdes on Wednesday (Aug. 31), tying the match at one, but Mount Vernon Nazarene responded with three goals in less than 11 minutes to notch a 4-1 victory over the Gray Wolves.
Igor Silva made three saves in goal for Lourdes. On Saturday (Sept. 3),
Diego Pereira scored midway through the first half to put the Gray Wolves in front but a pair of second half goals by Huntington gave the Foresters a 2-1 victory.
Yianni Kanellopoulos made one save in net for Lourdes.
Scouting Holy Cross (Ind.): The Saints have won two straight matches after downing Goshen 4-2 last Wednesday (Aug. 31). Eight different goal scorers have found the back of the net for Holy Cross this season. Gabe Nyenka leads the Saints with four points, having scored once while adding two assists. Juan Perez has three points on the year with a goal and an assist. In net, Claudio Fuentealba has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 2.63 goals against average and a .538 save percentage.
Scouting Point Park: The Pioneers split a pair of matches over the weekend at the LTU Blue Devil Classic, defeating host Lawrence Tech 2-0 on Sunday (Sept. 4) before falling to Taylor 1-0 on Monday (Sept. 5). Philipp Harder leads Point Park with two goals and two assists for six points on the year. Jaime Rodriguez has added a goal and a helper for three points. In net, Max Savila has played most of the minutes, posting a 2.33 goals against average and a .529 save percentage.
Samuel's Scoring Streak Ends: Anthony Samuel scored his team-leading third goal of the season at Mount Vernon Nazarene, extending his scoring streak to three consecutive games. The string came to an end at Huntington though, despite having one shot on goal.
Rotating Netminders: Lourdes has used three different goalkeepers thus far this season.
Alex Brock has appeared in three matches, posting a 2.33 goals against average and a .632 save mark to lead the way.
Yianni Kanellopoulos and
Igor Silva have each made an appearance between the posts as well.
Seeking 100: The next victory for the Gray Wolves will be head coach
Matt Johnson's 100th of his collegiate coaching career. Johnson is currently in his 12th season overall and enters the week with a 99-116-11 career mark.
That's a Lot of Matches: Robert Pereznegron has passed teammate
N'Faly Diallo's mark for career starts entering the week with 56 and also ranks third on the all-time matches played list with 68 appearances. Diallo is second all-time at Lourdes with 55 career starts during his time at Lourdes. He also is tied with Pereznegron with 68 career appearances, just two shy of Jose Silviera (2017-2021) for second.
In the Record Books: Darius Passley-Bennett and
Leon Eisert are tied for eighth all-time with seven career goals. They trail Haggi Amirally by one goal for seventh on the all-time charts. Eisert is also tied with Akilla Arno (2015-2017) for third with nine career assists. He is one helper shy of the school mark held by Jake Kirchoff-Sleet (2015-2016) and
Farouk Amoo (2018-2021).
Andris Klempert ranks sixth on the career assists list with seven, needing one more to match
Savio Adams (2018, 2020-21) for fifth in school history.
More Top Performances: Leon Eisert is currently tied for fifth with Reece Riccardi (2016-2019) with 23 career points.
Darius Passley-Bennett is tied for 10th on the list with Akilla Arno (2015-2017), each tallying 17 points.
Hussein Sbeiti has three career match-winning goals, tied for third most in program history. Sbeiti is one match-winner shy of Judah Goodridge's (2015-2017) second place mark of four.
Gray Wolves Tabbed Sixth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in fifth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. The Gray Wolves were picked just behind fifth place Madonna. Indiana Tech was the unanimous selection to win the league crown.
