Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: The penultimate week of the regular season has arrived for Lourdes as the Gray Wolves find themselves in a tie for sixth place in the WHAC standings. Lourdes hosts Concordia (Mich.) on Wednesday afternoon before heading to Siena Heights for their final road contest of the campaign.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over as the second head coach in program's history prior to the 2019 season. Johnson sports a 107-127-19 (.460) record overall in his 13th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 32-43-11 (.436) mark in his third year at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Concordia (Mich.) holds a 5-4 series edge against the Gray Wolves dating back to Oct. 14, 2015. The Cardinals won last year's meeting in Ann Arbor, Mich. 1-0. The series is deadlocked 2-2 at Wildcat Stadium. Lourdes is 6-2 all-time against Siena Heights in a series that began Oct. 24, 2015. The Gray Wolves have won five straight meetings between the two sides after a 3-0 triumph at Wildcat Stadium last season. Lourdes is 2-1 against the Saints in Adrian, Mich.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Indiana Tech scored a pair of first half goals and made them hold up last Wednesday, defeating the Gray Wolves 2-0 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Alex Brock made four saves in goal for Lourdes. On Saturday, Aquinas and Lourdes battled for 90 minutes at Wildcat Stadium but neither team could crack the scoreboard as the Saints and Gray Wolves settled for a scoreless draw. Brock had nine saves as part of his clean sheet.
Scouting Concordia (Mich.): The Cardinals are coming off a 1-1 draw against Michigan-Dearborn last Saturday. Bryce Schaner leads Concordia with five goals this season. Carter Kerbawy has a team-high four assists and shares the points lead with Schaner as each have tallied 10. In goal, Kyri Wixom has played nearly every minute, sporting a 2.97 goals against average and a .640 save percentage.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints enter the week having dropped back-to-back decisions after falling 2-0 at Indiana Tech on Saturday. Siena Heights travels to Aquinas on Wednesday before hosting the Gray Wolves. Gaizka Zandio leads the Saints in scoring, having tallied seven goals and three assists for 17 total points. Marcelo Rocha has contributed five goals and 11 points. Between the posts, Ricardo Moreno has played all but 17 minutes, sporting a 1.69 goals against average and a .711 save percentage. He has a pair of shutouts on the year.
Most Draws Ever: Lourdes has set a new school record for ties in a season after drawing with Aquinas for the team's fifth deadlock of the season. The Gray Wolves played to four draws last season. Prior to 2022, Lourdes had recorded just seven ties in the program's first seven seasons.
Mixing Up the Lineup: Hussein Sbeiti is the lone Gray Wolf to start all 13 matches this season.
Daniel Mirlach has been on the pitch to open in all 12 of the matches in which he has played. A total of 18 different players have drawn a starting assignment for Lourdes this year.
Moving Up the Record Books: Diego Pereira netted his first career goal of the season, which proved to be the match winner, at Rochester (Mich.). Pereira is now tied with Reece Riccardi (2016-2019) for seventh on the all-time charts, one goal shy of moving into the top-five all-time. Coronel Adds to Points Lead: Martin Coronel handed out his first assist of the season on the match-winning goal at Rochester, his first collegiate helper. Coronel now has five points on the year, most of any Gray Wolf.
Brock Solid in Goal: Alex Brock has yielded just 10 goals in 11 matches between the posts for the Gray Wolves, posting a 0.91 goals against average. He has made 48 saves on the year, stopping shots at an .828 clip. His third shutout of the season against Rochester (Mich.) gives him five career clean sheets, moving him into a tie for third on Lourdes' all-time list with
Igor Silva (2020-2022).
