Men's Soccer Begins Three-Match Road Trip This Week

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes begins a three-match road trip this week as Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play nears the midway point.  The Gray Wolves head to Madonna on Wednesday afternoon before facing Rochester (Mich.) in a Saturday matinee.

Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over as the second head coach in program's history prior to the 2019 season.  Johnson sports a 106-125-18 (.462) record overall in his 13th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 31-41-10 (.439) mark in his third year at Lourdes.

Series Notes: Madonna leads the all-time series against the Gray Wolves 6-0-2 dating back to Oct. 31, 2015.  Lourdes tied the Crusaders in a scoreless battle last season at Wildcat Stadium, snapping a six-game losing skid in the series. Madonna is 3-0 against Lourdes in Livonia, Mich.  The Gray Wolves hold a 4-1-1 all-time advantage against Rochester (Mich.) in a series that began Sept. 23, 2017.  The two sides battled to a 2-2 deadlock last season, ending a three-game winning streak in the series for the Gray Wolves.  Lourdes is 3-0 all-time on the Warriors' home field.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Northwestern Ohio took the lead with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half but Martin Coronel answered less than 40 seconds later as the two sides battled to a 1-1 draw at Wildcat Stadium last Wednesday.  Alex Brock made three saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.  On Saturday, Lawrence Tech netted the lone goal of the match with 4:30 to play as the Blue Devils defeated Lourdes 1-0 at Wildcat Stadium.  Brock had five saves, including a stop of a penalty kick, in the loss.

Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders enter the match following a 2-0 win over Aquinas at home on Saturday afternoon.  Andres Gomez has scored a team-high four goals this season for Madonna, giving him eight points.  Daniel Watkins also shares the team lead with eight points, including a pair of assists which are tied with Johonnier Torres Gonzalez for most on the squad.  In goal, Afonso Henrique has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 0.67 goals against average and an .833 save percentage.

Scouting Rochester (Mich.): The Warriors enter the week having lost two straight games after falling at Indiana Tech 5-0 on Saturday.  Rochester hosts Aquinas on Wednesday before entertaining the Gray Wolves.  Dmitar Stankovic leads Rochester in scoring this season with four goals and nine total points.  Nemanja Adamovic has handed out a team-high two assists.  Between the posts, Brad Carlson sports a 2.00 goals against average and a .625 save percentage while Kris Tauzik has a 4.29 GAA and a .423 save mark as they have split time.

Coronel Takes Scoring Lead: After not scoring in the first six matches of the season, including missing a penalty kick, Martin Coronel rebounded with goals in back-to-back matches.  The junior scored the match-winner at Cornerstone before converting a penalty kick opportunity last Wednesday against Northwestern Ohio to even the match.  Coronel leads the team with his two goals, and has 24 total shot attempts, 12 of which have been on frame.

Brock Solid in Goal: Alex Brock has yielded just six goals in seven matches between the posts for the Gray Wolves, posting a 0.86 goals against average.  He has made 26 saves on the year, stopping shots at an .812 clip, while tallying a pair of shutouts.

Lots of Even Matches: Lourdes has already tied the school record with four ties this season, having just reached the midway point in the year.  The Gray Wolves also played to four draws in 2022, giving the program eight ties in the last two years after playing to just seven total in the program's first seven seasons.

Handing Out Helpers: Hussein Sbeiti has moved into a tie with Savio Adams (2018, 2020-21) for fifth on the Gray Wolves' career assist list with eight career helpers.  Sbeiti has also moved into a tie with Anthony Samuel (2020-2022) on the program's career points list with his 24 over his four years at Lourdes.

In the Record Books: Diego Pereira is tied with Brendon Long (2018-2020) for eighth all-time at Lourdes with nine career goals.  They trail Reece Riccardi (2016-2019) by just one goal for seventh on the all-time charts.  Pereira is also ninth on the school's all-time points list with 22, trailing Riccardi by one. 

More Top Performances: Hussein Sbeiti is also ranked in the top-10 in scoring for the Gray Wolves.  He is tied with Haggi Amirally (2016-2017) for 10th with eight career goals while his eight assists are tied with Savio Adams (2018, 2020-21) for sixth on that chart.  Sbeiti's 24 career points match Anthony Samuel's (2020-2022) total which ranks sixth all-time at Lourdes.

Lots of Appearances: Hussein Sbeiti has moved into sixth place all-time at Lourdes with 58 career appearances on the pitch.  He needs to step on to the field three more times to move into the top-five on the all-time list.  Sbeiti has started 40 career contests, moving into a tie for ninth with Farouk Amoo (2018-2021) on that list.  His next start will pull him even with Judah Goodridge (2015-2017) in eighth place.

Gray Wolves Tabbed Sixth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in sixth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  The Gray Wolves were picked just behind fifth place Lawrence Tech.  Madonna was selected to win the league crown.

Team Captains: Victor Espinoza, Daniel Mirlach, and Ariel Ramirez Rios will serve as team captains for the 2023 season.

This and That: Lourdes has 97 total shot attempts this season but only 37 on goal .. the Gray Wolves have a 42-35 edge in corner kick chances ... opponents have been issued 25 yellow cards this season to the Gray Wolves' 15.
