With five individuals earning runner-up honors in their weight class, Lourdes finished third as a team on Saturday at the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championships held inside Garth Pleasant Arena in Rochester Hills, Mich.
The Gray Wolves finished the day with 108 points, outdistancing fourth place Cornerstone by 33 points. Indiana Tech was crowed the league champion with 165 points while Marian was runner-up with 161.5 points."
"This was a fantastic day of wrestling for our program," head coach
Dock Kelly III said afterwards. "Our guys came to wrestle, and it showed. To have five wrestlers competing in the finals shows that we were peaking just at the right time. I'm so proud of the fact that we battled all day long. Coach Piszker and Coach Jackson did a fantastic job of having these guys ready to wrestle at a level that exceeded everyone's expectation and they deserve the credit for that."
Nick Rodriguez (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.) finished runner-up for the Gray Wolves at 125 pounds. Ranked 12
th nationally, Rodriguez opened with a bye before downing teammate
Tyler Hisey (St. Marys, Ohio/Memorial H.S.) in the semifinals in a 5-2 decision. In the title match against sixth-ranked Trevor Marsman of Cornerstone, Rodriguez fell in a narrow 7-5 decision. He bounced back in the true second place match though to win an 11-4 decision. Hisey had reached the semis with a 14-7 decision in the quarterfinals and won a consolation match in a 15-4 major decision before falling in the third place bout.
Drew Torres (Phoenix, Ariz./Tempe Union H.S.) scored a second place finish at 165 pounds. He won a 4-1 decision in the quarterfinals before registering a pin with one second remaining in his semifinal match. In the title tilt he suffered a fall against seventh-ranked Elliott Rodgers of Marian.
Noah Clary (Upper Sandusky, Ohio/Upper Sandusky H.S.) finished runner-up at 174 pounds. He opened with a first period fall in the quarterfinals before notching another pin just 1:09 into his semifinal match. He lost in a 6-0 decision in the title contest against 13
th-ranked Noah Hollendonner of Marian. Also at 174,
Dominico Migliori (Curtis, Ohio/Clay H.S.) finished in third place for the Gray Wolves. After dropping his opening match, he battled back to win matches in a first period fall and a 6-5 decision before scoring a 15-2 major decision in the third place bout.
Will Speight (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) added a second place effort for the Gray Wolves at 184 pounds. Ranked 11
th nationally, he opened in the semifinals with an 8-5 decision over fourth-ranked Sam Osho of Marian. He then battled top-ranked Eric Vermillion of Indiana Tech to overtime in the championship before falling in sudden victory 4-2.
Carter Kroll (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario H.S.) was the final Lourdes runner-up, doing so at 197 pounds. Ranked 12
th nationally, he scored a pin at the 3:22 mark in the second period of the quarterfinals. He followed that up with a 5-3 win in sudden victory over 11
th-ranked Nathan Critchfield of Indiana Tech before losing the title match in a 7-1 decision versus eighth-ranked Jack Servies of Marian.
At 157,
Derick Coleman (Clyde, Ohio/Clyde H.S.) placed fourth. After losing in the quarterfinals, he registered a pair of falls in the consolation bracket before suffering a defeat in sudden victory in the third place match.
"We will take a few days off to rest and recover and then we will turn our sole focus to the NAIA National Championships," Kelly concluded.
The NAIA National Championships will take place March 3-4 inside Hartman Arena in Wichita, Kan. The national qualifiers will be announced on Feb. 21.
