Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: Lourdes head north of the border for a four-game weekend series against Rochester (Mich.) this weekend. The Gray Wolves and Warriors will play a doubleheader on Friday, having moved the opener up a day due to inclement weather, prior to wrapping up the season with another twinbill on Sunday afternoon.
Head Coach Josh Bradford: In his fourth season in the Lourdes dugout,
Josh Bradford has a 56-65 (.463) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach. He is the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Probable Starters: With the make-up games this past week, along with pushing Saturday's games up one day, Lourdes has not determined a starting rotation for this weekend's four-game series at this time.
Series Notes: Lourdes leads the all-time series against Rochester (Mich.) 16-8 dating back to March 18, 2012. The Gray Wolves have won 14 of the last 15 meetings between the two schools after sweeping last season's doubleheader against the Warriors at Mercy Field by scores of 3-1 and 10-0. Lourdes holds a 5-2 series edge against the Warriors in Rochester Hills, Mich.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Thomas More used a six-run sixth inning to pull away from the Gray Wolves last Wednesday (March 15) on the way to a 12-5 victory in Crestview Hills, Ky.
Josh Hare went 4-for-4 for the Gray Wolves in the loss. On Monday, Lourdes swept a doubleheader from 22nd-ranked Indiana Tech. The Gray Wolves won the opener 9-8 on
Cord Noble's walk-off single.
Harrison Jackson hit a grand slam while
Ryan Jagodzinski had three hits. In game two,
Joey Oehlers tossed seven innings of four-run baseball as the Gray Wolves downed the Warriors 15-5. Jackson homered against and had a three-RBI game along with
Joel Suraganan. On Tuesday, Northwestern Ohio scored a 7-6 walk-off win in game one before winning the nightcap 26-10.
Michael Strzelewicz went 3-for-4 with four RBI in game two.
Scouting Rochester (Mich.): The Warriors enter the weekend following a doubleheader split at Michigan-Dearborn on Monday in which they won the opener 9-6 before falling in game two 6-2. Lucas Bateman leads Rochester hitting .400 on the season. Deyante Fossett has two home runs and a team-high 11 runs batted in. As a team the Warriors are hitting .246 in 2023. The Rochester pitching staff sports a 13.34 earned run average with opponents batting .246 against them.
Downing Ranked Foes: Lourdes entered Monday's doubleheader against 22nd-ranked Indiana Tech just 3-38 all-time against NAIA top-25 opponents before winning both games against the Warriors. Lourdes' most recent win against a ranked foe had been an 8-1 triumph at #16 Bryan on March 11, 2020. The other previous ranked wins came in 2012 (#24 Saint Xavier) and 2015 (#23 Northwestern Ohio).
Quite a Day: Harrison Jackson led the Lourdes offense in the doubleheader win against nationally-ranked Indiana Tech, slugging a pair of home runs. He hit a grand slam in the opener as part of a two-hit game before launching another long ball as part of a three-RBI game in the night cap. This season Jackson is batting .311 with two homers and a team-leading 16 runs batted in.
Making the Most of Opportunities: Michael Strzelewicz has made the most of his appearances this season, playing in seven games and making five starts. He is hitting .500 (10-for-20) with two doubles, five runs batted in, and six runs scored. Strzelewicz went 2-for-4 in game two against Indiana Tech and 3-for-4 with four RBI in game two against Northwestern Ohio.
Getting on Base: Steve Haugh has reached safely in all 15 games this season. He is batting .372 and has drawn a team-high 12 walks and been hit four times for a .525 on base percentage. Haugh has two home runs and 15 runs batted in as well.
Suraganan's Streak Ends: Joel Suraganan had his team-leading 10-game hitting streak snapped in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader. Suraganan is leading the Gray Wolves with a .408 batting average this year along with a team-high three home runs and has driven in 13. He has a .694 slugging percentage.
Oehlers Has Season's Best Start: Joey Oehlers earned the win in game two against Northwestern Ohio after allowing just four runs and eight hits in seven innings of work. He fanned three and walked three. On the season, Oehlers has 16 strikeouts in 15.1 innings of work.
Gray Wolves Tabbed Eighth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was picked to finish eighth in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference in the 2023 preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. The Gray Wolves were slotted just behind Cornerstone and just ahead of Aquinas. Northwestern Ohio was tabbed as the preseason favorite.
This and That: Harrison Jackson has stolen a team-leading four bases this season ... Lourdes has committed 34 errors in 15 games, leading to 27 unearned runs ...
Wyatt Smith leads the pitching staff with 18 innings logged, striking out 17 and allowing opponents to hit just .274 against him ... the Gray Wolves' March 30 scheduled doubleheader at IUPUC has been cancelled due to field conflicts in Columbus, Ind.
