Men's Soccer Set for Two Home WHAC Battles

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: After a three-match road trip, Lourdes returns home to Wildcat Stadium this week for a pair of matches.  The Gray Wolves will entertain Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday afternoon before playing host to Lawrence Tech on Saturday.

Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over as the second head coach in program's history prior to the 2019 season.  Johnson sports a 106-124-17 (.464) record overall in his 13th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 31-40-9 (.444) mark in his third year at Lourdes.

Series Notes: Northwestern Ohio has won all 10 previous meetings against the Gray Wolves in a series that began Sept. 26, 2015.  Last year the Racers were 3-0 winners during the regular season before downing Lourdes 4-1 in the WHAC quarterfinals, with both matches taking place in Lima, Ohio.  UNOH is 3-0 against Lourdes at Wildcat Stadium.  Lawrence Tech is 7-1 against the Gray Wolves dating back to Oct. 3, 2015 and have won the last seven matches between the two schools.  Last season, the Blue Devils scored a 1-0 victory over Lourdes in Southfield, Mich.  Lawrence Tech is 3-1 against Lourdes at Wildcat Stadium.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Taylor netted a pair of first half goals and added another insurance tally in the 61st minute as the Trojans defeated Lourdes 3-0 in Upland, Ind. on Tuesday.  Yianni Kanellopoulos made two saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.  On Saturday, Lourdes opened WHAC play with a 1-0 victory over Cornerstone in Grand Rapids, Mich.  Martin Coronel scored the lone goal of the match with 16:34 to play while Alex Brock made a pair of saves to preserve the shutout.  

Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers snapped a three-match losing skid on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at Siena Heights to open WHAC play.  Diego Cerezo and Moritz Guettel have each scored two goals for UNOH and have four points.  Cerezo and Guettel share the team's points lead with Tomas Echevarria, who has a team-high two assists.  In goal, Georgios Theodoulides has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 3.37 goals against average and a .434 save percentage.

Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils had their three-match winning streak end on Saturday with a 2-2 draw at home against Indiana Tech.  Lawrence Tech travels to Rochester (Mich.) on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes.  Skander Larfaoui leads the Blue Devils offensively.  He has six goals and 15 total points.  Ty Cerget holds the team's assist lead with four helpers.  In goal, Kieran Malachino has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 1.00 goals against average and a .739 save percentage.

Coronel Finds Back of the Net: Leading the team with 17 shot attempts this season, including nine on goal, Martin Coronel finally found the back of the net on Saturday for the match-winner at Cornerstone.  The tally was the third of his career and second match-winning goal.

Schuele Earns First Collegiate Point: Nate Schuele garnered his first collegiate point on Saturday with an assist on the match-winning goal for the Gray Wolves at Cornerstone.  His first point came in his seventh career match.

Brock Earns Another Clean Sheet: Alex Brock registered his second shutout of the season against Cornerstone, making two saves between the posts.  He now has four career clean sheets, fourth most in program history.  He needs just one more to move into a tie with Igor Silva (2020-2022) for third on the all-time list.

Handing Out Helpers: Hussein Sbeiti has moved into a tie with Savio Adams (2018, 2020-21) for fifth on the Gray Wolves' career assist list with eight career helpers.  Sbeiti has also moved into a tie with Anthony Samuel (2020-2022) on the program's career points list with his 24 over his four years at Lourdes.

In the Record Books: Diego Pereira is tied with Brendon Long (2018-2020) for eighth all-time at Lourdes with nine career goals.  They trail Reece Riccardi (2016-2019) by just one goal for seventh on the all-time charts.  Pereira is also ninth on the school's all-time points list with 22, trailing Riccardi by one. 

More Top Performances: Hussein Sbeiti is also ranked in the top-10 in scoring for the Gray Wolves.  He is tied with Haggi Amirally (2016-2017) for 10th with eight career goals while his eight assists are tied with Savio Adams (2018, 2020-21) for sixth on that chart.  Sbeiti's 24 career points match Anthony Samuel's (2020-2022) total which ranks sixth all-time at Lourdes.

Lots of Appearances: Hussein Sbeiti has moved into seventh place all-time at Lourdes with 56 career appearances on the pitch.  He trails Reece Riccardi (2016-2019) by just one appearance for sixth on the all-time list.  Sbeiti has started 38 career contests, moving into a tie for 10th with Riley Hogan (2015-2018) on that list.

Gray Wolves Tabbed Sixth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in sixth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  The Gray Wolves were picked just behind fifth place Lawrence Tech.  Madonna was selected to win the league crown.

Team Captains: Victor Espinoza, Daniel Mirlach, and Ariel Ramirez Rios will serve as team captains for the 2023 season.

This and That: With the win at Cornerstone, Lourdes improved to 6-2-1 all-time in WHAC openers ... the Gray Wolves have played to seven draws over the past season and a half after registering seven total in the program's first seven years ... Lourdes has won four consecutive regular season league matches dating back to 2023.
