Box Score SYLVANIA, Ohio (LourdesAthletics.com)Â -- The Lourdes University men's soccer team advanced to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference semifinals in dramatic fashion on Saturday, outlasting the visiting Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech University in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 tie in regulation and two tense overtime periods. The Gray Wolves ultimately prevailed 5-4 in the shootout to keep their tournament hopes alive.
The Gray Wolves took an early lead in the 20th minute when Jannik Hofmann scored off an assist from Ibrahim Akl. Lawrence Tech responded with an equalizer in the 35th minute, tying the match 1-1 at halftime.
In the second half, the Blue Devils edged ahead with an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute, but Lourdes quickly countered as Martin Coronel scored the equalizer with an assist from Nawfal Hassani, bringing the score to 2-2.
The teams fought through two 10-minute overtime periods without further scoring, leading to a penalty shootout. Senior goalkeeper Alex Brock proved crucial in the shootout, coming up with a decisive save to secure a 5-4 victory for the Gray Wolves and propel Lourdes into the WHAC semifinals.
