Lourdes Opens WHAC Play Saturday Hosting Aquinas

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Lacrosse: Having won back-to-back home games, Lourdes wraps up a three-game homestand on Saturday.  The Gray Wolves welcome sixth-ranked Aquinas to Timberstone Junior High as Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play begins.

Head Coach Will Lowe: In his first season on the Lourdes bench, Will Lowe has a 3-1 (.750) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves.  Lowe is in his fifth season as a collegiate head coach, sporting a 25-24 (.510) career mark.  He is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 5-4 series advantage against Aquinas dating back to March 29, 2014.  The Saints have won the last two meetings between the two schools though after scoring a 10-7 victory over the Gray Wolves last season in Grand Rapids, Mich.  The all-time series is tied 2-2 on Lourdes' home field.

Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves opened the home slate with a 15-1 triumph over Midland on March 10.  Kalani Hale scored three times while Caden Louthan and Hayden Barber each added three tallies for the Gray Wolves.  Xander Slate made six saves in the win.  Last Tuesday (March 12), Lourdes downed Missouri Baptist 12-6.  Hale had four goals and Jake Busta added three more.  Slate made five stops in the cage for the Gray Wolves.

Scouting Aquinas: The Saints remained undefeated on the season with a 17-4 victory on the road at Saint Mary (Kan.) on last Tuesday (March 12).  Cooper Nienhuis leads the Saints with 19 goals and 20 total points this season while Cade Linnemeyer has added eight goals and 13 points.  TJ Murphy has handed out a team-high six assists while Reed Chastain has 18 ground balls.  in goal, Austin Hynote has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 10.04 goals against average and a .589 save percentage in nearly 180 minutes of action.

Reid Earns WHAC Honors: Dique Reid was named the WHAC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the win over Missouri Baptist last Monday.  Reid won 16-of-19 faceoffs and picked up 13 ground balls against the Spartans.  He had back-to-back faceoff wins in which he drew an assist as Lourdes scored three goals in an 18-second span.

Lourdes in WHAC Openers: Lourdes is 4-3 all-time in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference openers.  Last season, the Gray Wolves fell on the road at seventh-ranked Aquinas 10-7 to begin league action.  Lourdes last opened the WHAC slate at home in 2021, falling 10-8 to Concordia (Mich.).

Facing Ranked Foes: Lourdes is 13-23 all-time against teams ranked in the NAIA top-10.  Last year the Gray Wolves went 0-4 against such opponents and have dropped their last nine since defeating #10 Madonna 12-4 on April 21, 2021.

Slate Solid in Goal: Xander Slate has been solid for the Gray Wolves in goal in his first season between the posts.  He has played all but 12 minutes for Lourdes sporting a 6.31 goals against average and a .547 save percentage.

Leading the Offense: Kalani Hale and Caden Louthan have paced the offense through the first four games this season.  Hale has scored 14 times and has a team-leading 18 points while Louthan leads the team with nine assists and has 17 points.

Winning Faceoffs: Dique Reid has led the way at the X for the Gray Wolves.  He has won 38 of the 50 (76%) faceoffs in which he has taken.  In addition, Reid leads the Gray Wolves with 24 ground balls this year.

Lourdes Tabbed Ninth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was picked to finish ninth in this season's preseason coaches' poll.  The Gray Wolves were picked to finish just behind Taylor and Michigan-Dearborn in the balloting.  Indiana Tech is the preseason favorite.

This and That: A total of 10 different Gray Wolves have scored goals this season and 12 different players have at least one point ... Lourdes is outscoring its opponents 23-9 in the first half ... the Gray Wolves are 22-27 all-time in WHAC regular season contests ... Caden Louthan's next goal will be the 50th of his career ... Louthan's 28 career assists rank him ninth all-time in program history in that category.
