Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: Lourdes returns to Mercy Field on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Siena Heights in doubleheader action. The terra cotta and black head back out on the road Sunday afternoon to face Aquinas in a twinbill that will take place on the campus of Cornerstone University.
Head Coach Josh Bradford: In his fifth season in the Lourdes dugout,
Josh Bradford has a 76-106 (.418) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach. He is the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Probable Starters: Brenden Holland (LHP, 0-6, 7.90) and
Caleb Loboschefski (RHP, 2-2, 3.64) are slated to start the two games on Saturday for the Gray Wolves against Siena Heights. On Sunday,
Wyatt Smith (RHP, 1-4, 7.52) and
Austin Nuhfer (LHP, 0-2, 5.87) will pitch for Lourdes in Grand Rapids, Mich. against Aquinas.
Series Notes: Siena Heights is 21-16 all-time against Lourdes in a series that dates back to April 5, 2012. The Saints have won the last three meetings between the two schools after sweeping a non-conference doubleheader in Adrian, Mich. back on March 12 by scores of 8-4 and 9-3. Siena Heights holds a 11-7 series edge in games played at Mercy Field. Aquinas leads the all-time series against Lourdes 21-11 dating back to April 21, 2012. The two schools split a twinbill in Grand Rapids, Mich. last season with the Gray Wolves taking the opener 7-4 before the Saints won game two 10-0. Aquinas holds a 13-4 series edge in games played on their home field.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Indiana Tech took a pair from the Gray Wolves last Wednesday at Mercy Field, winning by scores of 12-2 and 13-4.
Alex Dupree and
Joel Suraganan both had multi-hit games in the nightcap for the Gray Wolves. On Saturday, Northwestern Ohio took both games of a doubleheader from Lourdes by scores of 4-3 and 9-2.
Christian Mays has two RBI for the Gray Wolves in the opener as the Racers won the game on a walk-off wild pitch. In game two,
A.J. Brinson had a pair of hits for Lourdes. Northwestern Ohio completed the weekend sweep of the Gray Wolves on Sunday, winning two more games by 9-1 and 12-4 counts. Suraganan homered in the opener for Lourdes' lone run while in game two
Jase Kennedy went deep. Andrew Arntson had two hits and two RBI for the Gray Wolves in the nightcap as well.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints are coming off a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday afternoon by scores of 2-1 and 13-4 on the road. Adam Wilding leads Siena Heights offensively batting .384 this season while Cole VanWasshenova has driven in a team-high 26 runs. Kenny Layman has hit four home runs already for the Saints. On the mound, Luc Olson is 4-1 this year with a 3.25 earned run average. He has struck out 12 in 36 innings of work.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints are coming off a doubleheader victory over Cornerstone 12-4 and 13-8 on Tuesday afternoon. Nicolas Verdugo leads Aquinas batting .402 this season. Grant Martin has a team-leading 22 runs batted in while hitting three home runs. Mark Binkowski shares the team's home run lead with Martin, having also hit three this year. On the mound, Mason Hill is 1-1 with two saves. He has struck out 30 batters in 26 innings of work and sports a 1.04 earned run average.
Edwards-Dugan Getting on Base: Caleb Edwards-Dugan has reached base in 12 consecutive games for the Gray Wolves this year. He has drawn 15 walks and been hit by a pitch five times this year on his way to posting a team-best .408 on base percentage. Edwards-Dugan is batting .268 and has stolen four bases.
Making the Most of Opportunities: Gray Harmer did not see his first action of the season until March 16, but has made the most of his playing time since then. The freshman has started nine games, batting .300 with five runs batted in. He has reached base safely in all nine of the contests in which he has played.
Dupree Takes the Hitting Lead: Alex Dupree has made the most of his collegiate debut for the Gray Wolves. The freshman leads the team with 34 hits this season, including a team-high eight doubles. He enters the week batting .330, a team best, while posting a .437 slugging percentage. In addition, he has 12 runs batted in and a team-high five stolen bases. Defensively, he has been nearly flawless in the field, committing just one error in 202 chances.
Leading the Pitching Staff: Caleb Loboschefski has paced the pitching staff over his six appearances this season. He is 2-2 with a 3.64 earned run average in 29.2 innings of work, making five starts. The redshirt-sophomore holds the team lead with 26 strikeouts this year. Opponents are batting just .241 against Loboschefski this season.
