INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (LourdesAthletics.com) -- Goals from sophomore
Nate Schuele and transfer student
Bruno Duarte weren't enough for the Lourdes University men's soccer team (0-2-1), who fought hard in a 90-minute battle against Marian University Knights Saturday, Aug. 31.
"Another learning experience for us," said head coach
Matt Johnson. "Marian worked very hard and they have some dangerous players up front that gave us trouble with their intensity, especially in the first 20 minutes. Once we settled in, we had some really good moments and controlled the game much better."
"Similar to Huntington, we made a few mistakes in back that showed our inexperience together - if we can iron those out we showed a lot of promise in how we played," Johnson said. "We have a couple weeks of training and 3 more games before the WHAC season starts, so we'll continue working on it."
The match, played at the Ascension St. Vincent's Field, saw Schuele strike in the 36th minute to match a goal from the opposing Knights who opened the scoring eight minutes prior to knot the score at one after an intensely defensive first half.
The second half was a back and forth battle as Marian started the scoring with a shot in the near-64th minute. Duarte, who scored the equalizer against Mount Vernon Nazarene University the match prior, countered with a
Federico Reali assisted goal in the 66th minute to tie the score, once more in his Lourdes career at two a piece. From there, the host Knights fired two more goals to seal the deal and take the win over the gray Wolves.
