Lourdes Volleyball Falls In Five

Box Score The Lourdes University Women's Volleyball team had a tough loss at home on Friday night against WHAC opponent Aquinas College as they lost in five sets.

Set one was a tough competitive battle for both teams as both teams mentally showed up to play. The Saints would claim the set but not after both teams would go point for point against each other until 11-11 tie was broken in the favor of the Saints when they would eventually build a lead to 22-16 before Head Coach Greg Reitz would call a timeout. The strategy worked as Lourdes would battle it back to a 20-24 deficit before finally succumbing to a Saints set one victory of 25-20. The Saints would lead the set in kills with a 13-10 advantage. Lourdes would commit eight errors to the Saints six.

Set two started out all Saints as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead against the Gray Wolves before Lourdes would get on the board. Lourdes would battle their way back into the set for a bit as they trailed by three at 9-12. That would be as close as the Gray Wolves would get though as the Saints would kick it in gear and win the set 25-17. The Saints would once again win in the kills' category with 13 to the Gray Wolves nine. Lourdes would commit nine errors in the set and finish with five more total attempts than the Saints though.

Set three appeared to be all Saints early on as they built a 3 point lead only to see that vanish as Lourdes would come up with timely hits and take their first lead in the set at 9-8. Lourdes would increase the lead to 12-9 before a mini rally from the Saints would draw them to a 13-12 Gray Wolves advantage. The two teams would battle to a 19 all tie before Lourdes University would win out 25-21. The Gray Wolves finished the set with 17 kills to the Saints 12. Lourdes also finished the set with 43 total attempts to the Saints 40.

Set four saw the momentum of set three carry over for the Gray Wolves as they jumped out early to a lead and never relinquished forcing a fifth and decisive set. The Gray Wolves hit on all facets of the game from net play to crucial digs as they won the set easily 25-17. Lourdes would finish the set with 15 kills to the Saints seven. Lourdes also would finish with 36 total attempts to the Saints 27.

The fifth and decisive set would belong to the Saints early on as they would jump out to a 7-3 lead before Coach Reitz would call a timeout to regroup the Wolves. The set would look in despair for the Gray Wolves as they trailed 12-8 but an exciting three point rally brought them within one. The set would go though in the way of the Saints as they defeated the Gray Wolves 15-12 in five sets.

The Gray Wolves return to action at 1pm on Saturday against Cornerstone University in WHAC conference matchup. The game will once again be played at the Southview High School in Sylvania, OH.
