Lourdes University stepped out of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening and posted a four sets victory over Spring Arbor. The Gray Wolves were 22-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-20 victors at the Spring Arbor Fieldhouse in Spring Arbor, Mich.
“In set one we started off well but let them back into it and lost our game plan and it showed,” head coach
Greg Reitz stated. In the final three sets we did a much better job of playing the way we should and being in the right position. We hit better, played better defense, set better, and served better and it showed as we scored better.”
The Gray Wolves allowed Spring Arbor to hit .268 as a team in the opening set but then held the Cougars to a .024 and .032 hitting mark over the next two sets. Lourdes saved its best hitting performance for the final set, swinging at a .267 rate to earn the victory.
Katie McKenty (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) and
Shelby Schuster (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) led the way for Lourdes with 16 kills each, with McKenty tallying seven in set four.
Katie Bartlett (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) added 15 kills.
Shauna Miller (Austin, Texsa/Wimberly H.S.) handed out a season-high 46 assists in the victory while
Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morell H.S.) tallied a match-high 28 digs. McKenty added 14 digs and Miller had 13 as each recorded double-doubles in the match.
Ashley Morris led Spring Arbor (1-19) with 17 kills while Lyndsay Murray had a team-high 19 digs for the Cougars.
“It's always good to get a win on the road,” Reitz added. “We need to come out and play well again on Friday on a short turnaround for a conference match.”
Lourdes (7-15) will return to action on Friday night as the Gray Wolves travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to battle Aquinas. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center.
