Davenport Ends Lourdes Win Streak at Five

Box Score

Lourdes University's school-record five-match winning streak came to an end on Wednesday evening, as Davenport spoiled Senior Night for the Gray Wolves with a four-set, 22-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-19 victory at Tam-o-Shanter.

The Panthers extended their winning streak to 12 straight matches, but not without a valiant effort from the Gray Wolves.

“We started off strong tonight,” head coach Greg Reitz stated.  “We grabbed the momentum early and kept it for a while.”

Lourdes trailed 15-11 in the opening set before mounting its comeback to take the opening stanza.  Five straight points off of the serve of Katie Bartlett (Toledo, Ohio/Northview H.S.) gave the Gray Wolves their first lead of the match, 16-15.  The set stayed tight, with Lourdes trailing 21-20, before a late run.  A kill by Bartlett made it 23-22, a lead the Gray Wolves would not relinquish.  Lourdes hit .359 in the opening set while limiting Davenport to a .179 hitting percentage.

In set two it was the Panthers that hit effectively, swinging at a .333 rate.  Davenport scored the first two points of the set and never allowed Lourdes to catch up the rest of the way, tying the match at one heading into the break.

The pivotal third set saw nine ties and three lead changes before a late Panther rally gave the visitors the advantage in the match.  Trailing 14-12, Lourdes went on a 5-0 run to take the lead, and extended the advantage to 21-17 following a Katie McKenty (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) kill.  Davenport answered with four points of its own to tie the match at 21, and the teams traded sideouts until 24-24.  An ace followed by a kill from Nicole Chase gave Davenport the upper hand though to end the set.

Davenport took the lead early in set four and never allowed the Gray Wolves to pull even on the way to the victory.  A 7-2 run midway through proved to be the difference, as the Panthers were able to turn a two-point lead into an 18-12 advantage.

“We went away from our middles and didn't continue with our game play,” Reitz added of the later sets.

McKenty led Lourdes with 14 kills and 14 digs while Bartlett and Shelby Schuster (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) each added 10 kills.  Bartlett also had 12 digs to complete her double-double, while Schuster added five blocks.  Allegra Recknagel (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion H.S.) handed out 49 assists while Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morell H.S.) tallied a match-high 17 digs.  Brown added eight kills and six blocks while Amelia Horton (Milan, Mich./Milan H.S.) tallied seven kills while hitting .375 on the night.

“Early on we were very effective in the middle with both Andrea and Amelia,” concluded Reitz.

The contest was the final home regular season match for both Schuster and Kirstin Kirk (Westland, Mich./John Glenn H.S.), both of whom were honored prior to the contest.

Chase led Davenport (29-5, 8-2 WHAC) with 15 kills while Hannah Stone added 14 more.  Both Chase and Stone hit .448 on the night.  Kelse Moon registered 15 digs while Amber Getty had 48 assists.

Lourdes (12-17, 4-6) will close out the regular season on Friday evening, traveling to Ann Arbor, Mich. to battle Concordia.  First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
