Box Score
Four of the five sets went to extra points on Wednesday evening, but in the end Lourdes ended up dropping a 25-20, 24-26, 26-24, 24-26, 16-14 non-conference match on the road against Siena Heights at the Fieldhouse in Adrian, Mich.
“This was a match that, statistically, we shouldn't have been in,” head coach
Greg Reitz stated afterwards. “It was good to see us battle though to stay in the match. Siena Heights is a very athletic team and we don't match up well with them. However, score wise we were able to.”
Lourdes started the match strong, taking an early 7-3 lead, only to see the Saints battle back. Siena Heights tied the opening set and took a 19-18 lead before scoring six of the final eight points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set number two was tight throughout, with 12 ties and four lead changes. The Gray Wolves took advantage of a Saints' service error, one of six in the set, and tied the match at one following an
Amelia Horton (Milan, Mich./Milan H.S.) kill, one of six in the opening two sets for the sophomore.
Lourdes had to battle back to force extra points in the third. Trailing 24-21, the Gray Wolves tied the match after Siena Heights committed a pair of errors and
Amelia Brown (Northwood, Ohio/Northwood H.S.) registered an ace. However, the Saints tallied the final two points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Gray Wolves faced a pair of match points against them in the fourth set before a pair of Siena Heights attack errors were sandwiched around an ace from
Katie McKenty (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) and an ace from
Shauna Miller (Austin, Texas/Wimberly H.S.) to force the decisive fifth set.
In set five, Siena Heights raced out to a 10-6 advantage before Lourdes battled back. The Gray Wolves got a pair of kills from
Shelby Schuster (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) and another from McKenty as part of a 7-2 run to take a 13-12 lead. The hosts were able to respond with three kills down the stretch though to capture the match.
McKenty led the Gray Wolves with 17 kills on the evening while Horton hit at a .450 clip registering 12 kills. As a team Lourdes hit .150 for the contest, despite a pair of .280 sets in numbers two and three. Miller tallied three assists while
Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morrell H.S.) registered a team-high 21 digs.
“Amelia played really well for us both offensively and blocking,” Reitz added.
Lindsey Adams paced Siena Heights (2-0) with 25 kills while Halie Baker added 20 kills for the Saints, which hit .213 for the match as a team. Nicole Morgan recorded 29 digs defensively for the Saints.
“We need to decrease our service errors (19),” Reitz concluded. “We are giving too many points away. Defensively I thought we played well as a whole, but our hitting percentage was way too low.”
Lourdes (4-6) will return to action on Friday evening, traveling to Rio Grande, Ohio to battle the University of Rio Grande. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
