Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lourdes took to the court for a pair of matches in Rio Grande, Ohio on Saturday morning, defeating Union (Ky.) in five sets in the first contest before falling to Cincinnati Christian in four sets in match two.

The Gray Wolves defeated the Bulldogs 19-25, 25-16, 25-17, 17-25, 15-12 before dropping a 25-21, 24-26, 25-22, 25-14 contest to the Eagles.

After dropping the first set against Union, Lourdes battled back, hitting .231 and .280 in sets two and three respectively to take the lead in the match.  After the Bulldogs forced a fifth set with a win in number four, Lourdes dug deep and pulled out their second five-set victory of the season.

“We reduced our errors considerably in sets two and three,” head coach Greg Reitz said after the contest.  “That proved to be key.”

Katie McKenty (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) led the Gray Wolves with 18 kills against Union (2-4) while Shelby Schuster (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) added 10 kills.  Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morell H.S.) had a team-high 22 digs while Alyssa Pelish (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) contributed 19 digs.  Jimenez also had 42 assists in the contest.

Andrea Brown (Northwood, Ohio/Northwood H.S.) had three solo and four assisted blocks as the Gray Wolves finished with 11 rejections for the match.

“Our middles blocked well against Union and we served tough enough to get the win,” Reitz added.

Against Cincinnati Christian, Lourdes fell behind after set one and trailed in the second 20-18 before rallying to tie the match at a set a piece.

“We had a chance to win set one but made a couple of errors late in the match,” Reitz stated.  “We did a good job of coming back in set two though.”

The Gray Wolves hit .265 in a tight set three but could not quite pick up the victory before falling in the fourth set.

“Cincinnati Christian is a consistent team,” Reitz commented.  “They did not make a lot of errors.”

Schuster hit .297 for the match and led Lourdes with 15 kills while McKenty added 13 more kills.  Pelish had a team-high 18 digs while Jimenez added 17 more.

Lourdes (5-8) will return to the court on Wednesday evening, traveling to nationally-ranked Indiana-East.  First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Richmond, Ind.
