Lourdes Bounces Back to Defeat Rio Grande

Box Score
Less than 18 hours after dropping a four-set decision to Rio Grande, Lourdes rebounded to defeat the Red Storm in four sets 26-24, 27-25, 23-25, 25-22 on Saturday afternoon at Owens Community College in Perrysburg, Ohio.

"We played much better today than we did last night," head coach Greg Reitz stated after the contest.  "We hit much better and were much more efficient.  This was one of our best hitting performances of the season."

Both teams were quite efficient offensively in the opening set as Lourdes hit .425 with 20 kills while Rio Grande posted a .378 mark with 17 kills.  Each school committed just three attack errors as there were 10 ties and seven lead changes.  Lourdes scored the final three points of the set, two on kills by Angie Pagan-Perez (Toa Baja, P.R./Bayamon Military Academy) who had seven first set kills.

In the second, the Gray Wolves needed three set points before finally taking a 2-0 lead in the match.  Lourdes battled back from down 10-4 early to tie the set and eventually take its first lead at 22-21.

It was Rio Grande that was able to extend the match with a narrow victory in the third, hitting .286 in the process.  The Red Storm took the lead 7-6 and never relinquished it the remainder of the set.  Lourdes never trailed in the final set though, holding Rio Grande to just .146 hitting, to close out the match.

Stephanie Richards (Toledo, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) led Lourdes with 20 kills in the victory, the most in a match by any Gray Wolf this season.  Pagan-Perez added 17 kills while Keyonna Gregory (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) tallied 14 kills on 26 swings while hitting .500 for the match.  As a team the Gray Wolves hit .265 for the contest.

Allegra Recknagel (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion H.S.) handed out 57 assists while tallying 13 digs for a double-double.  The 57 assists set a new school record, breaking Hannah Thompson's 2011 mark of 54.

"Allegra made much better choices more often tonight," Reitz stated.

Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R ./Juan Quirindongo Morrell H.S.) led all players with 24 digs while Pagan-Perez and Richards both added 10 digs a piece to complete their double-doubles.

Betsy Schramm led Rio Grande (8-13) with 15 kills while Nicole Ogg registered 18 digs.  Kayla Briley had a double-double with 44 assists and 11 digs for the Red Storm.

Lourdes (12-9) will return to Tam-o-Shanter on Wednesday evening to host Lawrence Tech.  The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match will begin at 7 p.m.
