Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes travels to Detroit, Mich. on Wednesday evening for a key Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match as the Gray Wolves move past the midway point in league play to face Marygrove. The Gray Wolves will then return "home" for two non-conference matches at Owens Community College on Friday and Saturday when Rio Grande pays Lourdes a visit.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his fourth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 57-64 (.471) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 77-99 (.438) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 8-0 all-time against Marygrove in a series that dates back to Aug. 20, 2010, the first day in which the Gray Wolves played volleyball. Lourdes has won five of the eight matches in straight sets, including a 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 decision at Tam-o-Shanter last season, while winning the other three contests in four sets. Lourdes has only faced the Mustangs in Detroit once, a 3-1 victory on Aug. 24, 2011. Lourdes is 0-2 all-time against Rio Grande with both meetings coming last season. The Gray Wolves fell in straight sets on the road before losing a 3-1 decision to the Red Storm at Tam-o-Shanter as part of the Gray Wolf Invitational.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened the week with a convincing straight sets victory over Spring Arbor last Wednesday, winning the third set 25-9 at Tam-o-Shanter. The Gray Wolves hit .264 in the victory led by 12 kills from
Stef Comte and 38 assists from
Lexie Curtis. Lourdes returned to WHAC play on Friday night, facing Aquinas at Springfield High School. The Gray Wolves were held to negative hitting in each of the three sets while being swept 25-16, 25-14, 25-18.
Keyonna Gregory led Lourdes with seven kills in the loss while
Michi Jimenez tallied a team-high 10 digs.
Scouting Marygrove: The Mustangs had won two straight matches before their win streak came to an end last Thursday evening with a 3-1 loss to Cornerstone in WHAC play. Marygrove has played just three home matches thus far this season and the Mustangs are still looking for that first victory in front of their home fans. Sarah Suppelsa leads the team with 199 kills while Amelia Velez is just two kills behind her and leads the team hitting .295 on the year. Nicole Kempinski has tallied 587 assists on the year while Kara Kempinski has registered a team-leading 425 digs. Kiara Cobbs leads Marygrove with 60 blocks on the season.
Scouting Rio Grande: The Red Storm has won six of its last eight matches despite dropping a 3-0 decision at Asbury on Saturday evening in its last appearance on the court. Rio Grande travels to Georgetown on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes this weekend. Betsy Schramm leads the Red Storm with 162 kills on the season while Kayla Briley has handed out 460 assists. Nicole Ogg leads the defense with 218 digs this year while Autumn Snider has blocked 48 attempts from the opposition.
Home Away From Home: Due to scheduling conflicts, Lourdes is finishing a stretch of playing three straight "home" matches away from Tam-o-Shanter. The Gray Wolves fell to Aquinas last Friday at Sylvania Southview High School and will now battle Rio Grande this coming Friday and Saturday at Owens Community College. Lourdes has never played volleyball matches at Owens.
Both Spectrums of Offense: Lourdes saw one of its best and worst hitting nights all-time within three days of each other last week. The Gray Wolves hit .264 in the victory over Spring Arbor, the fifth best hitting night in program history and the second best hitting night of the season (Lawrence Tech, .275). Two nights later against Aquinas, Lourdes hit negative in all three sets, closing the night with a -.066 hitting percentage.
700/500 Club: Ali Mass has just surpassed 700 kills and 500 digs for her career. The senior is the school career record-holder with 706 kills and ranks fourth all-time in program history with 508 digs.
She's Only a Freshman: Stephanie Richards has already tallied 168 kills this season for the Gray Wolves, a mark that ranks eighth on the school's single season kills list. In fact, her kill total is just 10 kills behind Hannah Thompson (2010-2011) for 10th place on the Lourdes career kill list.
Closing in On Number One: Michi Jimenez ranks third in school history with 665 career digs in just two seasons with the Gray Wolves. She needs 45 more to match Jordan Kerr (2010-2011) for second on the all-time list and is 58 digs shy of Hannah Thompson's (2010-2011) school record of 723 career digs.
Set One a Key: Lourdes is 10-0 this season when winning the opening set of the match. Conversely, the Gray Wolves have yet to tally a victory when they have dropped the opener.
Captains Named: Allegra Recknagel and
Alyssa Pelish have been selected as team captains for the 2013 season. Recknagel will be a captain for the second straight year, making her just the second two-time captain in program history. Hannah Thompson was a team captain in both 2010 and 2011.
