Lourdes Sweeps Marygrove to Advance in WHAC Tournament

Box Score

Lourdes ran its home win streak to seven straight matches, and four straight overall, on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves defeated Marygrove 25-18, 25-22, 27-25 at Tam-o-Shanter in the opening round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament.

With the victory, the seventh-seeded Gray Wolves advance to Friday's quarterfinals where they will meet second-seeded, and 21st-ranked Davenport.

"It was a great win for us tonight, especially doing so in three sets," head coach Greg Reitz stated after the victory.  "We're able to move forward and get the chance to play Davenport again, this time on a neutral floor."

The match was a defensive battle throughout as Lourdes set a school record for a three-set match with 174 attack attempts, 87 of which were dug up by the Mustangs.  Marygrove swung 140 times, with the Gray Wolves tallying a three-set record of 85 digs.  Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morrell H.S.) set an individual three-set mark with 31 digs for Lourdes, posting the second most digs in school history overall, while Marygrove's Kara Kempinski tallied 29 digs.

"The defensive was impressive all night," Reitz added.  "We expected long rallies and we sure had a bunch of them.  That's while those two are the two liberos in the conference."

Marygrove, the tournament's 10th seed, led 8-6 early in the opening set before the Gray Wolves went on a 14-1 run.  Jimenez served nine consecutive points while Alyssa Pelish (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) added four more behind the service line as Lourdes took the opening set.

It was another run with Jimenez serving in set two that catapulted the Gray Wolves to the win.  Trailing 21-17, Lourdes ran off seven straight points to build a 2-0 lead in the match.

Lourdes appeared to be cruising to the sweep in the third set, building an 18-11 lead before Marygrove battled back.  A 12-5 run by the Mustangs tied the set at 23, and the visitors had a set point at 25-24 to extend the match before three straight points by the Gray Wolves earned the hosts the victory.

Angie Pagan-Perez (Toa Baja, P.R./Bayamon Military Academy) led Lourdes with 14 kills and added 17 digs for a double-double while Keyonna Gregory (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) added 21 kills.  Stephanie Richards had 10 more kills for Lourdes as the Gray Wolves hit .109 for the match.

Allegra Recknagel (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion H.S.) tallied a double-double with 38 assists and 11 digs while Pelish also tallied 12 digs for the Gray Wolves.

Katharina Hall and Amelia Velez each had seven kills for Marygrove while Nicole Kempinski handed out 16 assists and registered 21 digs.

Lourdes (19-11) will look to match its school record win streak as the Gray Wolves go for their fifth straight victory on Friday against Davenport at The Activities Center on the campus of Madonna University in Livonia, Mich.  First serve is slated for 4:45 p.m.

"It wasn't the cleanest win, but we did what we needed to get the win," Reitz concluded.  "We know we'll have another tough task on Friday."

Marygrove's season ends with a 19-16 record.
