Lourdes Posts a Pair of Saturday Volleyball Sweeps

Lourdes University's women's volleyball team earned a pair of home sweeps on Saturday, defeating Calumet 25-13, 25-14, 26-24 before downing Huntington 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 at Tam-o-Shanter.
 
The Gray Wolves have now won six of their last eight matches overall and improve to 9-4 at home this season.
 
In the opening match against Calumet, Lourdes hit .287 for the contest while holding the Crimson Wave to just .055 for the afternoon.  Andrea Brown (Northwood, Ohio/Northwood H.S.) had 13 kills and hit .684 while Stef Comte (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) added 10 kills with a .526 hitting percentage.
 
"Our middles played really well this morning," head coach Greg Reitz stated.  "For the pair to go three sets without an attack error is really significant."
 
Brown also had 10 digs to complete a double-double while Stephanie Richards (Toledo, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) added 10 kills.  Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morell H.S.) added 20 digs in the three sets while Alyssa Pelish (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) added 11 more.  Allegra Recknagel (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion H.S.) also had a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs.
 
The serving of Brown allowed the Gray Wolves to score seven straight points in the  opening set to break it open and build a 17-6 advantage.  Lourdes hit .300 in the opening set with 16 kills and just four errors.
 
In set two, the Gray Wolves were even better.  Seventeen kills with just one error led to a .471 percentage offensively.  Lourdes scored eight of the final 10 points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
In the final set, Lourdes held a 24-20 lead only to see the Crimson Wave tie it up.  The Gray Wolves pulled out the final two points though to complete the sweep.
 
Kelsey McFarlane led Calumet (9-25) with six kills and 11 digs while Danielle Burge added 13 digs.
 
In the afternoon, Lourdes tallied 10 aces, four from Comte, to help earn the straight sets victory.
 
"Our serving and passing is what won the match for us," Reitz stated.  Stef had a very strong service performance."
 
The opening set was back and forth with seven ties and four lead changes before Lourdes rallied late.  Trailing 19-16, Angie Pagan-Perez (Toa Baja, P.R./Bayamon Military Academy) helped spur an 8-0 run that put the Gray Wolves on top for good.
 
Lourdes scored the first six points of set two, aided by a pair of Comte aces, and never let the Foresters get closer that within three the rest of the set.  Huntington was held to -.032 hitting as the Gray Wolves took a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
In the final set, Lourdes maintained a one to three point advantage most of the way to close out the match.
 
Comte and Pagan-Perez led the way for Lourdes with eight kills each while Comte also had eight digs.  Pagan-Perez hit a team-best .333.
 
"Angie had a nice bounce back performance for us after struggling a bit in the morning," Reitz added.
 
Recknagel handed out 30 assists while Jimenez registered 14 digs.
 
Audrey Mallers led Huntington (8-23) with eight kills while Codie Morey had 13 digs.
 
Lourdes (17-11) will close out the 2013 regular season on Wednesday evening at home hosting Concordia (Mich.).  First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter with Senior Night activities held prior to the match.
