#6 Madonna Downs Lourdes in Volleyball WHAC Opener

Lourdes saw its three-match winning streak snapped on Wednesday evening as sixth-ranked Madonna posted a 25-19, 25-7, 25-16 victory over the Gray Wolves at the Activities Center in Livonia, Mich. in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
 
"We didn't play well against a nationally-ranked team," head coach Greg Reitz stated.  "We needed to raise our level and we didn't do it."
 
The Crusaders held Lourdes to -.065 hitting for the evening and outblocked the Gray Wolves 8-5 on the way to remaining unbeaten on the season.
 
Lourdes fell behind quickly in the opening set 8-2 but rallied to get back in the set.  Five straight points off of Stef Comte's (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) serve to pull within one.  The Crusaders answered with a 6-1 run though to remain in control of set one.
 
In set two the Gray Wolves tallied just two kills while committing nine errors.  Madonna scored the first seven points of the set and ended the set with nine consecutive points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Set three saw the hosts build a 10-4 advantage and took advantage of 10 more hitting errors by the Gray Wolves to complete the sweep.
 
Stephanie Richards (Toledo, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) led the Gray Wolves with seven kills while Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morrell H.S.) had a team-high nine digs.  Lexie Curtis (Toledo, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) handed out 13 assists.
 
Stacey Catalano led Madonna (14-0, 1-0 WHAC) with nine kills and seven digs while Amanda Obrycki had a team-high nine digs for the Crusaders.  Emilie Freeman added six blocks defensively.  As a team Madonna hit .257 for the match.
 
Lourdes (7-4, 0-1) will return home next Wednesday evening to begin a four-match homestand.  First serve against Cornerstone is set for 7 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
