Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: After playing 10 of its first 11 matches away from home, Lourdes University's volleyball team returns to Tam-o-Shanter this week to begin a four-match homestand. The Gray Wolves will face Cornerstone in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match on Wednesday before entertaining Robert Morris (Ill.) and Saint Xavier on Friday and Saturday respectively in non-conference competition.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his fourth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 54-60 (.474) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 74-95 (.438) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
On the Air: Wednesday's match against Cornerstone will be broadcast live on BCSN on Buckeye Cablesystem. The match will be replayed on BCSN against at 4 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Thursday as well as at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. In addition, BCSN2 will show the match on Wednesday night, tape-delayed, at 10 p.m. as well as at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday and 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
Series Notes: Madonna holds a 2-0 all-time advantage over Lourdes with the two schools meeting once each season dating back to 2011. Last year the Golden Eagles defeated the Gray Wolves 3-1 at in Grand Rapids, Mich. This will be the schools first meeting at Tam-o-Shanter, as the 2011 contest, won by Cornerstone 3-0, was played at Southview High School. Lourdes holds a 2-1 all-time advantage against Robert Morris (Ill.) dating back to 2010. The Gray Wolves won the last meeting 3-0 on Oct. 22, 2011 at Tam-o-Shanter. Saturday's match against Saint Xavier will be the first ever between the two schools.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened up WHAC play on Wednesday evening, falling in straight sets on the road at #6 Madonna. The Gray Wolves were held to -.065 hitting while the Crusaders outblocked Lourdes 8-5 for the match.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles have won three straight matches following a pair of 3-0 sweeps against Grace Bible and Indiana-South Bend over the weekend. Cailie Johnson leads Cornerstone hitting .398 on the year with 3.36 kills/set (131 total) while Kim Weaver has handed out 374 assists (9.59/set). Defensively Abby Miedema tallies 4.77 digs/set (186 total) while Libby Webber has tallied 33 total blocks (1.38/set).
Scouting Robert Morris (Ill.): The Eagles enter the week having dropped four straight matches after falling in each match of the Saints Invitational Tournament last weekend. Robert Morris travels to Illinois Tech on Tuesday before heading to Lourdes on Friday. Allyson Murray leads the Eagles with 86 kills (2.46/set) while Myranda Cate has handed out 255 assists (7.29/set). Myranda also has tallied 134 digs (3.83/set) while Morgan Miller and Murray lead the team with 18 blocks each.
Scouting Saint Xavier: The Cougars had their three-match win streak snapped on Friday with a four-set loss to Saint Ambrose. Saint Xavier hosts Cardinal Stritch on Tuesday and travels to Siena Heights on Friday before facing Lourdes. Marie Hackert leads the Cougars with 76 kills (2.71/set) and 21 blocks while Kelli Shaffer has handed out 201 assists (7.18/set). Dominique Aramburu leads the team with 96 digs (3.39/set).
Best Start in Program History: Lourdes 7-4 record through 11 matches is the best start in school history. The Gray Wolves previous best 10-match record was 5-6 during the inaugural 2010 season. In fact, the earliest Lourdes has ever reached the seven-win plateau prior to this season was also in 2010 when it took 14 matches to reach that mark.
Getting Off to a Good Start: Lourdes is a perfect 7-0 this season when winning the opening set. Conversely, when the Gray Wolves have dropped set one, they have gone on to lose the match.
Location Change: Lourdes match on Oct. 4 against Aquinas has been moved from Owens Community College to Sylvania Southview High School. The contest will still begin at 7 p.m.
Looking to Turn Around the Offense: Lourdes hit -.065 in the loss at Madonna, with only one player (
Stephanie Richards) hitting positive for the match. The Gray Wolves hit negative in two of the three sets, including a -.280 clip in the second set in which the Gray Wolves had just two kills and nine errors.
Strong Serving: There has only been one match this season (Illinois Tech) in which Lourdes has had fewer aces than the opposition.
Stef Comte leads Lourdes with 10 aces while the team has tallied 59 through 11 contests. Twelve of the 13 Gray Wolves that have seen the floor this year have registered at least one ace.
Captains Named: Allegra Recknagel and
Alyssa Pelish have been selected as team captains for the 2013 season. Recknagel will be a captain for the second straight year, making her just the second two-time captain in program history. Hannah Thompson was a team captain in both 2010 and 2011.
This and That: Keyonna Gregory is the only player to have played in all 40 sets this season ... Lourdes will play 10 of its next 13 matches at home, including one at Southview High School and two other "home" contests at Owens Community College ...
