Cornerstone Tops Lourdes in Four Sets Wednesday Night

Box Score
Lourdes University opened a four-match homestand on Wednesday evening, suffering a 25-18, 25-9, 23-25, 25-16 setback to Cornerstone in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play at Tam-o-Shanter.

"It was a disappointing effort for us tonight in front of a large, very supportive crowd in a match that was live on television," head coach Greg Reitz stated after the contest.

The opening set had nine ties and four lead changes and was tied at 16 until the Golden Eagles went on a late run.  A 9-2 spurt to close the set gave the visitors an early lead in the match.  Set two saw the Gray Wolves manage just one kill the entire set, hitting -.318 while Cornerstone connected at a .259 rate.  The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the set and added an 8-0 run late to build a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Gray Wolves battled back in the third set, which saw 15 ties and six lead changes.  Neither team led by more than three the entire set with Lourdes scoring the final two points on a kill by Stephanie Richards (Toledo, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) and a bad set by the Golden Eagles.

Lourdes kept the fourth set close early, trailing 10-9, before a 13-5 run by the guest broke it open.  Cornerstone swung at a .281 rate for the set to pick up the victory.

Richards led the Gray Wolves with 11 kills while Alyssa Pelish (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) added 10 digs.  Lourdes hit .000 for the match with 27 kills against 27 errors.

"This was another quality opponent we played," Reitz added.  "We need to step up to that level of play to compete on our side of the net and we're just not doing that right now."

Cailie Johnson led Cornerstone (6-7, 1-0 WHAC) with 14 kills and a .400 hitting percentage while Chelsea Lake added 11 kills and 13 digs while swinging at a .429 rate.  Abby Miedema led all players with 20 digs in the match.

Lourdes (7-5, 0-2) will continue its homestand on Friday evening, stepping out of WHAC action to host Robert Morris (Ill.).  First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
