Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes reaches the midway point of the 2013 season this week with a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matches. The Gray Wolves conclude a four-match homestand on Wednesday evening entertaining Indiana Tech before heading south to Lima, Ohio on Friday night to battle Northwestern Ohio.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his fourth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 55-62 (.470) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 75-97 (.436) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
On the Air: Wednesday's match against Indiana Tech will be broadcast live on BCSN2 on Buckeye Cablesystem. The match will be replayed on BCSN2 again at noon on Thursday as well as at 8 a.m. on Friday. In addition, BCSN will show the match on Wednesday night, tape-delayed, at 11:30 p.m. as well as at 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Series Notes: Indiana Tech holds a 4-0 all-time advantage against Lourdes dating back to 2010. The Warriors posted a 3-1 win over the Gray Wolves last season, the first time Lourdes had won a set against Indiana Tech. The two schools have met just once at Tam-o-Shanter, a 3-0 Warrior victory on Oct. 5, 2011. Northwestern Ohio holds a 4-0 advantage as well against Lourdes following a straight sets sweep at Tam-o-Shanter in 2012. The Racers won the lone meeting place in Lima, Ohio, a 3-0 decision, during the 2011 season. The series dates back to 2010.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes played three home matches at Tam-o-Shanter last week, posting a 1-2 mark. The Gray Wolves fell in WHAC action on Wednesday 3-1 to Cornerstone after hitting .000 for the match while allowing the Golden Eagles to swing at a .243 clip. Lourdes fought off six match points in set four on Friday night against Robert Morris (Ill.) before eventually notching a five-set non-conference victory. On Saturday, the Gray Wolves were held to negative hitting in the first two sets and were swept in three by Saint Xavier in a non-conference tilt.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors are looking to snap a three-match losing streak after being swept three times at the Holiday Inn Express Invitational after defeating Saint Ambrose to begin the weekend. Suzanne Taylor leads Indiana Tech with 145 kills on the season while Taylor Kelso has posted a team-best 273 digs, a mark that ranks 46th nationally. Shanice Richards has notched 53 total blocks for the Warriors, which ranks 49th nationally in that category as a team.
Northwestern Ohio: The Racers enter the week having won seven straight matches following a 3-0 sweep at Michigan-Dearborn last Wednesday evening. Northwestern Ohio travels to Marygrove on Wednesday before hosting Lourdes on Friday night. Chanel Cantere has 162 kills on the year, leading a team that ranks 14th nationally in hitting percentage at .258. Ellie Comes has tallied 194 digs while Calley Hawkins has a team-high 23 blocks.
Going Five: Lourdes is 2-0 this season when going the distance in matches. In both victories, the Gray Wolves had to win the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set. Lourdes has won five straight five-set matches dating back to September of 2012 and is 7-1 in five-setters dating back to November of 2011.
Best Start in Program History: Lourdes 8-6 record through 14 matches is the best start in school history. The Gray Wolves previous best 14-match record was 7-7 during the inaugural 2010 season. In fact, the earliest Lourdes has ever reached the eight-win plateau prior to this season was also in 2010 when it took 15 matches to reach that mark.
Playing Defense: Lourdes is holding opponents to just a .158 hitting percentage on the season. In addition, the Gray Wolves are registering 16.1 digs per set, led by
Alyssa Pelish (3.54) and
Michi Jimenez (3.50). The Gray Wolves have also allowed just 57 service aces total in 52 sets as well.
Freshman Leading the Gray Wolves: Stef Comte has been Lourdes most efficient hitter thus far this season. The freshman is hitting at a .233 rate for the Gray Wolves, 45 points better than any other teammates. Defensively, Comte is tied for second on the team averaging 0.65 blocks per set as well.
Another Top Freshman: Stephanie Richards has led the Gray Wolves from an offensively standpoint thus far this season, tallying 132 kills on the year. Her 3.1 kills per set rank seventh in the WHAC.
Location Change: Lourdes match on Oct. 4 against Aquinas has been moved from Owens Community College to Sylvania Southview High School. The contest will still begin at 7 p.m.
Captains Named: Allegra Recknagel and
Alyssa Pelish have been selected as team captains for the 2013 season. Recknagel will be a captain for the second straight year, making her just the second two-time captain in program history. Hannah Thompson was a team captain in both 2010 and 2011.
