"This was definitely a disappointing way to end our season," head coach
Greg Reitz stated. "I thought we matched up pretty well going into the match."
Â
Northwestern Ohio started quickly, using an 11-2 run to take a 15-4 lead in the opening set. Lourdes committed seven attack errors in the stanza, all in the first 21 points of the match. The Gray Wolves were never able to climb back in the set, falling 25-13. The Racers hit .333 with 13 kills in the opening set while also tallying a pair of aces.
Â
Lourdes, the tournament's third seed, hung tight through the midway point in set two. The Gray Wolves led early 6-4 before the Racers scored three straight points to take an advantage. UNOH led 11-10 before a 6-1 run gave them separation. Lourdes fought back to within two, 17-15, before a late 6-2 spurt propelled Northwestern Ohio to a 25-20 win.
Â
The Racers took a 10-6 lead in the third before four straight points by the Gray Wolves off of the serve of
Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morell H.S.) pulled Lourdes even. The set was still tied, one of nine ties in the stanza before Northwestern Ohio scored four straight points to take a 22-18 lead. Lourdes battled back behind the serve of Jimenez, scoring five straight points to pull in front. The Gray Wolves had a pair of set points in the third that the Racers erased before scoring the final three points in a 27-25 win.
Â
"It really looked like we played nervous," Reitz added. "They had a lot of energy and aggression on the court, especially the first two sets, and we couldn't match it. We started to come around in the third set, but by then it was too late."
