Aquinas Hands Lourdes Volleyball Its First WHAC Loss

Box Score Lourdes won the opening set on Saturday afternoon against Aquinas, but the Saints responded with wins in the next three to defeat the Gray Wolves 21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-19 at Tam-o-Shanter.  With the loss, Lourdes saw its five-match win streak come to an end while also being handed its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference setback of the year.

Lourdes came out strong in the opening set behind a 7-0 run midway through the stanza behind the serving of Stef Comte (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.).  The Gray Wolves would not relinquish the advantage the rest of the way behind a .250 attack percentage in which they committed just four errors.  Carolyn Manley (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) tallied six kills on 10 swings in helping Lourdes take the early lead.

The Gray Wolves took a quick 5-1 lead in the second set and led until the very end.  With Lourdes on top 23-19, Aquinas responded with the final six points of the set, three on kills, and ended the set with a block to even the match at one.  With the loss, the Gray Wolves saw their consecutive sets won streak snapped at 16.

"I think we carried the momentum of last night's win (versus Siena Heights) into today's first set and most of set two," head coach Greg Reitz stated.  "They took the momentum from us and we were never able to take it back."

Aquinas took the lead for good at 11-10 of the third set and slowly increased the advantage.  With a 19-17 lead, the Saints scored the next five points to build a 2-1 lead in the match.  Lourdes hit -.020 with 10 attack errors for the second straight set.

"We ended up hitting very inefficiently," Reitz added.  "Our serving seemed to get worse as the match went along and they made changes and we didn't adjust to them."

The fourth set was close most of the way with 11 ties and four lead changes until Aquinas took control late.  With the set tied at 18, the Saints scored seven of the final eight points in the match to earn the victory.

Katie McKenty (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) led the way for Lourdes with 14 kills while Manley added 12 more.  Lexie Curtis (Toledo, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) handed out 24 assists and tallied 10 digs while Angie Pagan-Perez (Toa Baja, P.R./Bayamon Military Academy) also had a double-double with 14 digs and 10 kills.  Mallory Lenhart (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) handed out 25 assists and added nine digs for the Gray Wolves.

Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morell H.S.) tallied a team-high 19 digs while Comte registered five blocks for Lourdes.

Michaela Ryan led Aquinas (7-3, 2-2 WHAC) with 11 kills while Brooke Wieland handed out 39 assists and tallied 18 digs.  Rachel Sprenger had a match-high 25 digs for the Saints defensively while Dayle Wood was involved in seven blocks.

Lourdes (7-6, 3-1) will remain at home on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Concordia (Mich.).  First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
