Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes University opens the 2014 home campaign as well as the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference slate on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves entertain Marygrove. The Gray Wolves will step out of WHAC play for the final time until the end of October on Saturday afternoon when Lourdes travels to Spring Arbor to face the Cougars for the second time in eight days.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his fifth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 71-74 (.490) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has an 91-109 (.455) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 10-0 all-time against Marygrove after downing the Mustangs twice in 2013. The Gray Wolves posted a five-set triumph in Detroit on Oct. 9, 2013 before sweeping Marygrove on Nov. 13, 2013 at home in the first round of the WHAC tournament. Lourdes is 3-0 all-time against Spring Arbor having swept the Cougars in Chicago, Ill. last weekend at the Saint Xavier/Trinity Christian Crossover. The Gray Wolves swept Spring Arbor at home last season as well after winning in four sets in 2012. Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened the weekend on Friday evening with a straight sets victory over Spring Arbor at the Saint Xavier/Trinity Christian Crossover. The Gray Wolves needed five sets in the Friday night cap to defeat Saint Xavier. On Saturday at Trinity Christian, Lourdes fell in three sets to Saint Francis (Ill.) in the morning before rebounding from two sets down to defeat Mount Mercy in five sets in the afternoon.
Scouting Marygrove: The Mustangs have dropped four straight contests, all at the Coastal Georgia Mariner Invitational last weekend, after opening the year with back-to-back victories. Hailey Brandes leads Marygrove with 47 kills while Kara Kempinski has tallied 97 digs through six contests. Alixandria Pappas has been involved in 22 blocks to lead the Mustangs.
Scouting Spring Arbor: The Cougars have dropped four straight matches, all last weekend at the Saint Xavier/Trinity Christian Crossover. Spring Arbor faces Indiana Wesleyan at home on Wednesday night before entertaining Lourdes on Saturday. Rebekah Kujat leads the Cougars with 88 kills and is hitting .276 on the year while Lyndsay Murray has tallied a team-leading 106 digs. Olivia Landis has a team-leading 27 blocks. Lourdes held Spring Arbor to just 13 kills and -.046 hitting for the match in the first meeting.
Lourdes in Home Openers: Lourdes is 3-1 all-time in home openers at Tam-o-Shanter following last year's five-set non-conference victory over Siena Heights. The Gray Wolves downed Ohio State-Marion to begin the home season in 2010 and Concordia (Mich.) in 2011 before falling to Rio Grande in four sets to open up the 201 home slate.
Lourdes in WHAC Openers: The Gray Wolves are 0-3 all-time in WHAC openers, having faced Madonna in the first conference contest each of the last three seasons. Lourdes was not a member of the WHAC during the inaugural 2010 campaign.
Jimenez Surpasses 1,000 Digs: Michi Jimenez, the school's all-time dig leader, became the school's first 1,000-dig member on Friday evening. The junior tallied her fourth dig of the match against Spring Arbor midway through the second set to reach the milestone. Jimenez enters the week with 1,061 career digs.
McKenty Closing in on Second: After recording 24 kills over four matches last weekend,
Katie McKenty is just four kills shy of second place all-time at Lourdes with 546 kills. Brooke Hearn (2010-2011) ranks second on the school charts with 550 while
Ali Mass (2010-2013) holds the school mark with 710 career kills.
Going the Distance: The Gray Wolves have gone five full sets in three of their six matches that have been contested thus far this season. Lourdes has posted a 2-1 mark in the five-setters this year after going 5-1 last year. The Gray Wolves are 12-2 in their last 14 five-set contests dating back to 2011.
Gregory Second All-Time in Blocks: Keyonna Gregory had three blocks last weekend and now ranks second in school history with 88 career rejections, passing Amelia Horton (2011-2012). Gregory is 50 blocks behind
Andrea Brown (2012-2013) for the top spot on the charts.
Captains Named: Michi Jimenez,
Mallory Lenhart, and
Carolyn Manley have been named Gray Wolf tri-captains for this season. Jimenez is a junior libero who is a two-time Honorable Mention All-WHAC pick. Lenhart and Manley are both in their first seasons at Lourdes, having transferred to the school in the offseason.
Lots of Appearances: Michi Jimenez has moved into sole possession of second place on the Gray Wolves' career sets played chart. She has played in 260 career sets, trailing just
Ali Mass (2010-2013) who appeared in 313 sets. Jimenez also is second all-time on the matches played list, having passed Hannah Thompson (2010-2011) for second place last weekend. Mass holds the career matches played record as well, having appeared in 106 contests.
