Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: The first half of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play comes to an end this week for Lourdes University as the Gray Wolves return home for two matches before embarking on a six-match road trip. Lourdes will host Indiana Tech on Wednesday evening before entertaining Davenport on Friday night. The Gray Wolves then travel to Madonna for a Saturday matinee.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his fifth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 77-77 (.500) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has an 97-112 (.464) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Indiana Tech holds a 4-1 series advantage against Lourdes with the Gray Wolves posting their lone win in the last meeting on Sept. 25, 2013 in four sets. The Warriors and Gray Wolves have split the two previous meetings at Tam-o-Shanter. Davenport holds a 6-1 all-time edge against the Gray Wolves but the schools split two meetings last year. The Panthers swept Lourdes in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Oct. 30, 2013 before the Gray Wolves defeated Davenport in five sets on Nov. 15 in the WHAC tournament. Madonna is 5-0 against Lourdes all-time, sweeping all five matches. Last year the Crusaders won a pair of meetings in Livonia, Mich., where four of the previous five contests have been held.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes used 12 service aces on Wednesday evening to post a 25-18, 25-18, 25-16 win at Michigan-Dearborn. The Gray Wolves struggled offensively on Friday, hitting just .019 for the match in a narrow 25-23, 25-23, 25-18 setback at Northwestern Ohio. The week long road trip ended on Saturday, again with hitting woes, as Lourdes lost at Cornerstone 25-20, 25-23, 25-16. The Gray Wolves hit -.043 in defeat.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors have lost two straight matches following a pair of 3-0 sweeps at Cornerstone and Davenport last weekend. Christine Foest leads Indiana Tech with 149 kills while Karli Jones has handed out 415 assists. Taylor Kelso has tallied a team-high 243 digs while Stacy Nagy has paced the blocking with 55 rejections. Â
Scouting Davenport: The Panthers enter the week having won three straight contests following a 3-0 sweep of Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon. Davenport travels to Madonna on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes. Hannah Stone leads the Panthers hitting .347 with 178 kills on the season while adding a team-high 51 blocks. Amber Getty has handed out 573 assists while Morgan Torres has posted a team-best 204 digs.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders have won 17 straight matches following a 3-0 sweep at home against Marygrove last Saturday. Madonna hosts Davenport and travels to Indiana Tech before hosting Lourdes on Saturday. Casey Gates has posted a team-high 264 kills for the Crusaders while Spencer Stokes has handed out 849 assists. Amanda Obrycki leads the defense with 313 digs while Emily Johnson has a team-high 65 blocks for Madonna.
Facing Ranked Foes: This week will mark the first time Lourdes has faced a NAIA Top-25 opponent during the 2014 season. The Gray Wolves are 2-13 all-time against ranked foes, posting a 2-5 record last year. Lourdes two victories came back-to-back during the WHAC tournament, defeating #20 Davenport and #23 Cornerstone in five sets each. Â
Looking For Most WHAC Wins Ever: Lourdes enters this week with five Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victories, matching the Gray Wolves' total for league wins in any season. Lourdes went 5-6 in both 2012 and 2013.
Serving Up Aces: Lourdes tallied 12 service aces last Wednesday in the victory over Michigan-Dearborn, tying for the fifth most aces as a team in a three-set match in school history.Â
Lexie Curtis tallied seven aces individually, the second most in any match in school history. She was one shy of the school record set just one week early, when
Carolyn Manley served up eight against Concordia (Mich.).
A Telling Stat: Offense is important and Lourdes record reflects that. The Gray Wolves are 9-0 this season when hitting a better percentage than their opponents, but are 0-6 on the year when posting worse numbers.
Nearing the Block Record: Stef Comte has already been involved in 36 blocks on the season, moving into second place all-time at Lourdes with 111 for her career. She is just 27 rejections shy of the school mark of 138 set by
Andrea Brown (2012-2013).
Captains Named: Michi Jimenez,
Mallory Lenhart, and
Carolyn Manley have been named Gray Wolf tri-captains for this season. Jimenez is a junior libero who is a two-time Honorable Mention All-WHAC pick. Lenhart and Manley are both in their first seasons at Lourdes, having transferred to the school in the offseason.
This and That: Lexie Curtis ranks 11th in NAIA averaging 0.63 aces per set and is 32nd overall with 30 total aces ...
Katie McKenty needs six kills for 600 in her career ...
Michi Jimenez's next dig will be her 1,200 of her career.
