Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Having moved up to 19th in this week's NAIA top-25 poll, Lourdes puts its unbeaten season on the line with three key WHAC matches. The Gray Wolves entertain Lawrence Tech on Wednesday night before heading to Dearborn, Mich. to face #22 Madonna and Siena Heights on Saturday in a pair of neutral site contests.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his sixth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 102-85 (.545) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has an 122-120 (.504) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 11-0 all-time against Lawrence Tech in a series that dates back to Sept. 17, 2011. The Gray Wolves won the first meeting this season between the two schools in straight sets on Sept. 9 in Southfield, Mich. Lourdes holds a 5-0 advantage in matches played at Tam-o-Shanter. The Gray Wolves are 2-6 all-time against Madonna dating back to Oct. 8, 2010 after defeating the Crusaders in straight sets at home on Oct. 3. In the only previous neutral site meeting, Madonna won a five-set contest in Adrian, Mich. last season. Lourdes holds a 7-6 advantage against Siena Heights dating back to Sept. 10, 2010. The Gray Wolves won in four sets on Sept. 11 at Tam-o-Shanter earlier this year. In the only previous neutral site meeting, Lourdes downed the Saints in five sets in 2010 in Defiance, Ohio.
Earlier This Season: The Gray Wolves hit .425 as a team led by 10 kills from both
Ave Stout and
Stephanie Ruffing and defeated Lawrence Tech 25-10, 25-17, 25-11 in Southfield, Mich. on Sept. 9.
Michi Jimenez tallied 21 digs for the Gray Wolves on Oct. 3 in a 25-20, 28-26, 25-12 victory over then #15 Madonna at Tam-o-Shanter. Ruffing put down 15 kills against Siena Heights on Sept. 11 as Lourdes posted a 25-21, 25-12, 22-25, 25-17 win at home.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes needed just 52 minutes to score a 25-13, 25-9, 25-10 win over Marygrove last Wednesday in the Gray Wolves' lone contest of the week.
Stephanie Richards hit .500 with 11 kills and
Stephanie Ruffing added nine kills and hit .529 without an error as the Gray Wolves hit .346 as a team for the match.
Michi Jimenez added 12 digs while
Meghan Birr handed out 28 assists in the triumph.
Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils have won three of their last five matches after sweeping Concordia (Mich.) last Wednesday at home. Mary Armstrong ranks second nationally with 388 kills while Makenna Strunk is 14th with 44 aces. Josie Queary ranks in the top-50 in the nation with 716 assists.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders have won 15 of their last 16 matches, and three straight following the loss to Lourdes. Madonna hosts Cornerstone on Wednesday before facing the Gray Wolves. As a team the Crusaders lead the country averaging 14.24 kills per set and are second with 13.07 assists per contest. Spencer Stokes is seventh nationally handing out 11.19 helpers per set.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints had their two-match win streak snapped last Wednesday with a four-set loss at Davenport. The Saints travel to Northwestern Ohio and Michigan-Dearborn before meeting Lourdes this week. Leze Vukaj ranks 46th in the country hitting .299 and is 32nd nationally with 1.10 blocks per set.
Highest Ranking Ever: Lourdes entered the top-25 poll for the first time ever last week (Oct. 6), checking in 20th in the national ranking. This week the Gray Wolves moved into a tie for 19th with MidAmerica Nazarene in the rankings.
And Then There Were Four: Lourdes enters the week one of just four undefeated teams remaining in NAIA. Joining the Gray Wolves are #1 Viterbo (26-0), #2 Midland (22-0), and Mount Vernon Nazarene (22-0).
Dropping Sets a Rarity This Season: Lourdes has lost just seven total sets all season and have won 25 of its last 26 sets dating back more than a month to Sept. 12. The Gray Wolves have dropped sets to just five teams all year, with only Saint Xavier and Aquinas forcing Lourdes to a fifth set.
Beating a Ranked Team: Lourdes win over 15th-ranked Madonna on Oct. 3 marked the first time the Gray Wolves had ever defeated a top-25 foe at home. All-time Lourdes is 4-16 against teams ranked in the national poll heading into the rematch which may have conference title implications involved with it on Saturday.
Offense Nation's Best: Lourdes leads all of NAIA hitting .296 as a team. The Gray Wolves are third in the country in assists at 12.97 per set while also ranking third as a team tallying 14.12 kills per set. In addition, Lourdes is 12th in aces per set with 2.34. Individually,
Lexie Curtis is seventh in NAIA in aces per set with 0.65 while
Meghan Birr is eighth tallying 11.09 assists per set.
Michi Jimenez is 28th in the county averaging 5.12 digs per set and
Stephanie Ruffing is among the top-50 in hitting percentage (.316, 34th) and kills per set (3.57, 41st).
