Box Score 2 Lourdes moved to a perfect 20-0 on the season on Saturday afternoon after posting a five-set victory over 22
nd-ranked Madonna and a three-set sweep against Siena Heights at the UMD Fieldhouse in Dearborn, Mich.
The 19
th-ranked Gray Wolves are now the lone undefeated team remaining in NAIA volleyball after the 25-27, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 15-11 over the Crusaders and a 25-11, 25-11, 25-13 against Siena Heights.
"We really had to battle against Madonna," head coach
Greg Reitz said after the matches. "We weren't playing our best volleyball early, but we fought back. Our players did a great job of stepping up at pressure times. Against Siena Heights we played extremely well. I was afraid of a letdown, but we didn't let that happen. We played well in all facets of the game in the second match."
Against Madonna (23-5, 12-2 WHAC), the opening set saw 13 ties and six lead changes. The Gray Wolves led 24-21 before the Crusaders battled back, taking advantage of three late attack errors from Lourdes to win the opening set.
Lourdes raced out to a 15-8 lead in the second set before Madonna closed to within one, 17-16. The Crusaders then forged ahead 22-20 before the Gray Wolves got late service aces from
Sam Dibert (Hartland, Mich./Hartland H.S.) and
Molly Shonk (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley H.S.) to come from behind to even the match.
There were 17 ties and six more lead changes in the third set before the Crusaders took a 2-1 lead in the match with the narrow 25-23 win. Madonna hit .302 in the stanza, its highest output of the day.
With the fourth set tied at 13, Lourdes slowly began to open up a lead with its service. A 6-1 run gave the Gray Wolves a 23-16 advantage on the way to evening the match.
The Gray Wolves hit .333 in the final set, and pulled away from a 7-7 tie by scoring eight of the final 12 points of the contest to earn their second victory of the season against a ranked foe. The win was Lourdes' first ever against a top-25 foe when the Gray Wolves were also ranked nationally.
Ave Stout (Huntertown, Ind./Bishop Luers H.S.) hit .342 with 20 kills in the five-set win while Shonk and
Stephanie Ruffing (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty H.S.) added 15 kills each. Shonk also had 15 digs to complete her double-double.
Stephanie Richards (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) added 11 kills for an offense that hit .228 for the match.
Meghan Birr (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.) tallied 65 assists and 13 digs for a double-double as well.
Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morell H.S.) tallied 27 digs to lead both teams while
Stef Comte (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) added six blocks.
Miranda Fuerst hit .452 with 18 kills to pace the Madonna offense while Breanna Geile had 21 digs defensively.
Stats and information on the Siena Heights (11-9, 7-8) match was not available as of late Saturday.
Lourdes (20-0, 15-0) will return home on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves entertain Concordia (Mich.). First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
