Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: After a perfect 28-0 regular season and a WHAC regular season title, 18th-ranked Lourdes looks to add a WHAC tournament title to its resume this weekend as the Gray Wolves host the conference tournament. Lourdes begins its tournament run on Friday evening, hosting Northwestern Ohio in the quarterfinals.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his sixth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 113-85 (.571) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has an 133-120 (.526) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is just 2-8 all-time against Northwestern Ohio in a series dating back to Oct. 2, 2010, with both victories coming this season. The Gray Wolves downed the Racers in straight sets on Sept. 25 at Owens CC and in Lima on Oct. 31. Northwestern Ohio has won the only two previous meetings played at Tam-o-Shanter. Against its potential semifinal opponents, Lourdes is 4-5 against Indiana Tech and 8-6 against Siena Heights with both series dating back to the 2010 campaign.
Earlier This Season: On Sept. 25 Lourdes scored a 25-15, 25-9, 25-10 victory over Northwestern Ohio at Owens Community College.Â
Stephanie Ruffing hit .588 with 11 kills and added 10 digs for the Gray Wolves in the victory. On Oct. 31 the Gray Wolves notched at 25-15, 25-19, 25-15 triumph over the Racers in Lima, Ohio.Â
Molly Shonk tallied 15 kills and hit .565 for Lourdes while
Meghan Birr handed out 38 assists and had 10 digs.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes celebrated Senior Night on with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-19 victory over Indiana Tech.Â
Stephanie Ruffing had 20 kills, 11 digs, and hit .439 in the victory. Ruffing had another big match with 24 kills, 12 digs, and hit .688 on Saturday against Davenport as the Gray Wolves scored a 25-19, 25-9, 25-13 victory over the Panthers. Lourdes capped the perfect regular season on Saturday afternoon, downing Aquinas 25-19, 25-21, 25-17. Ruffing had a team-high 14 kills while
Molly Shonk added 11 kills and 21 digs for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers enter the tournament having dropped three of their last four contests after falling in four sets against Indiana Tech on Saturday to wrap up the regular season. Nora Fa'atiga leads Northwestern Ohio with 344 kills on the season while Katie Elson is hitting a team best .252. Elson is also the team's assist and service ace leader with 831 and 46 respectively. Defensively, Cierra Anderson paces the squad with 429 digs while Calley Hawkins has recorded a team-leading 104 blocks.
Lourdes in the WHAC Tournament: Lourdes is 4-5 all-time in the WHAC tournament, having competed in the event four times. The Gray Wolves advanced to the championship match in 2013 before falling to Madonna. Last year and in 2012 Lourdes was eliminated in the quarterfinals, and the Gray Wolves failed to advance from pool play in the 2011 event.
WHAC Champs and NAIA Bid: Lourdes won its first WHAC regular season title this year with its perfect 22-0 conference record. Along with the conference crown, the Gray Wolves have also earned an automatic bid to the NAIA national tournament which begins Nov. 21.
Ruffing National Attacker of the Week: Stephanie Ruffing was named the NAIA National Attacker of the Week, as well as the WHAC Attacker of the week for her efforts in last week's three victories. The junior hit .462 while averaging 6.44 kills per set in the three straight set matches. Ruffing also added 3.56 digs per set defensively.
Birr Repeats at WHAC Setter of the Week: For the fifth time this season
Meghan Birr was named the WHAC Setter of the Week. The junior handed out 12.67 assists per set while also adding 2.11 digs per frame.
Surpassing 2,000: Michi Jimenez became the first Gray Wolf to surpass the 2,000 dig plateau, doing so in the final set against Davenport on Saturday. The senior libero enters the tournament with 2,024 career digs, 1,301 more than any other player in program history.
Closing in on 200: With a victory in Friday's quarterfinals, Lourdes would play the 200th match in program history on Saturday afternoon in the tournament semifinals. The Gray Wolves are 113-85 all-time through the team's first 198 matches.
And Then There Was One: Lourdes enters the week as the lone undefeated in NAIA women's volleyball. In fact, Mount Vernon Nazarene (31-1) is the only other program with less than three losses this season.
This and That: Lourdes has outdug all 28 opponents this season ... the Gray Wolves have dropped just 11 total sets all season ... Lourdes is a perfect 28-0 this season in the second set ... Lourdes leads the NAIA in kills per set (14.68) and assists per set (13.64) and ranks second as a team in hitting percentage (.293) ...
Meghan Birr is third individually in assists per set (11.67) while
Ave Stout is sixth in the country in hitting percentage (.383).
