Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes looks to remain unbeaten as the Gray Wolves begin Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action this week along with playing its home opener as well. The Gray Wolves head to Marygrove on Wednesday night for the first league match of the year before commencing the home season on Saturday afternoon, entertaining Spring Arbor.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his sixth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 89-85 (.511) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has an 109-120 (.476) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 12-0 all-time against Marygrove dating back to Aug. 20, 2010, with the last three victories coming as 3-0 sweeps, including two last season. The Gray Wolves hold a 3-0 advantage over the Mustangs in Detroit, Mich. Lourdes is 4-0 all-time against Spring Arbor dating back to Oct. 3, 2012. Last season the Gray Wolves posted a 3-0 victory over the Cougars in Chicago, Ill. as well as a three-game sweep in Spring Arbor, Mich. Lourdes won the only previous meeting at Tam-o-Shanter in straight sets on Oct. 2, 2013.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes went unbeaten at the RMU Eagles Invitational Aug. 21-22. The Gray Wolves posted 3-0 sweeps over Governors State and host Robert Morris (Ill.) on Friday. On Saturday, the Gray Wolves rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Saint Xavier in five sets before toppling Cardinal Stritch in a four-set contest.
Scouting Marygrove: Like Lourdes, Marygrove has been idle since Aug. 22 when the Mustangs wrapped up a 1-4 weekend at the Arizona Christian Classic. The Mustangs won the opener against Providence Christian before falling to Faulkner, Arizona Christian, Benedictine University at Mesa, and Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). Rachel Staudt leads Marygrove with 59 kills and a .388 hitting percentage while Hayley Jury has handed out 174 assists. Erica Wilson has a team-leading 63 digs while Paige Hughes has been involved in 14 blocks for Marygrove.
Scouting Spring Arbor: The Cougars went 2-2 last weekend at the Michigan-Dearborn Early Bird tournament, defeating the host Wolverines and Lawrence Tech while falling to Madonna and Judson. Spring Arbor plays at Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday night and hosts Rochester (Mich.) on Friday before facing Lourdes. Rebekah Kujat leads the Cougars with 62 kills and a .218 hitting percentage this year while Annica Stotz has handed out 99 assists. Defensively, Taylor Johnston has a team-high 74 digs.
Conference Openers: Since joining the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference in 2011, Lourdes is 1-3 in its first league tilt of the season. The Gray Wolves fell in three sets at Madonna in 2011 in their first conference match ever before suffering the same fate in 2012 at home against the Crusaders. In 2013 Lourdes against lost in three sets at Madonna before opening the league slate in 2014 at home against Marygrove with a 3-0 victory.
Lourdes in Home Openers: Lourdes is 4-1 all-time in home-opening matches. In 2010 the Gray Wolves defeated Ohio State-Marion in four sets before downing Concordia (Mich.) 3-1 in 2011. The lone home-opening loss for Lourdes came in 2012, a straight sets setback to #17 Madonna before the Gray Wolves defeated Siena Heights in five sets in the 2013 home opener. Last year, Lourdes swept Marygrove to open the home campaign.
Best Start Ever: Lourdes 4-0 record is its best start to a season in program history. The Gray Wolves won their first three matches in 2010 before dropping a contest to Rochester to end the streak. The best five-match start in program history came in both 2010 and 2012, a 4-1 mark which could be bested with a victory on Wednesday night.
Offensive Production in the Opener: Lourdes hit .407 as a team in the season opener against Governors State, the second best offensive performance in program history. The Gray Wolves only hit better when swinging at a .519 clip to set the school record on Oct. 27, 2012 against Ohio State-Marion.
Serving Up Aces: Lourdes tallied 38 service aces in four matches at the RMU Eagles Invitational. The Gray Wolves registered 19 in the opener against Governors State, second most in a match in program history. Only on Sept. 16, 2011 did Lourdes record more, registering 23 against Ohio State-Marion. In the win over Governors State,
Lexie Curtis tied the individual mark with eight, matching
Carolyn Manley's total from Sept. 17, 2014 against Concordia (Mich.).
Record Book Watching: Michi Jimenez already holds the school's career digs record with 1,630, 907 more than any other player in a Gray Wolf uniform. She also holds the school mark for sets played (366), and is second in matches played with 101, just five shy of Ali Mass' (2010-2013) career mark of 106 matches.Â
Stephanie Richards ranks second on the career kills list with 702, just eight behind Mass' record of 710. Â
