Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes looks to remain unbeaten this week with three key Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matches on the schedule. The Gray Wolves travel to Lawrence Tech on Wednesday before hosting Siena Heights on Friday night. The week concludes Saturday afternoon when Lourdes heads to Grand Rapids, Mich. to battle Aquinas.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his sixth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 91-85 (.517) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has an 111-120 (.481) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 10-0 all-time against Lawrence Tech dating back to Sept. 17, 2011. Last season the Gray Wolves won 3-0 at home and 3-1 in Southfield, Mich. Lourdes is 4-0 against the Blue Devils on the road. Lourdes series against Siena Heights is tied 6-6 dating back to Sept. 10, 2010. Last year the Gray Wolves won the first meeting in Adrian, Mich. 3-0 before falling on the road a second time 3-1. Lourdes is 3-2 against the Saints at Tam-o-Shanter. Aquinas is 5-0 all-time against Lourdes dating back to Oct. 7, 2011. The Saints won a pair of 3-1 matches last year as well as the only previous meeting at Aquinas.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes remained unbeaten, defeating Marygrove 3-0 on Wednesday night to open WHAC play.Â
Stephanie Ruffing led Lourdes with 13 kills while hitting .379. On Saturday, the Gray Wolves were 3-0 winners at home against Spring Arbor.Â
Stephanie Richards posted a team-leading 11 kills for Lourdes.
Scouting Marygrove: The Blue Devils have dropped seven straight matches following setbacks to Point Park and Indiana-East last Saturday. Mary Armstrong leads Lawrence Tech with 223 kills and is hitting .315 to go along with a team-high 45 blocks while Lexi Szymoniak has tallied 127 digs to pace the team. Josie Queary has handed out 349 assists.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have won three straight entering the week following a sweep against #13 Davenport last Wednesday. Siena Heights hosts Northwestern Ohio before facing Lourdes. Abby Whitehead leads the Saints with 63 kills and is hitting .301 while Nicole Morgan has a team-best 92 digs. Carly Tillotson has tallied 12 aces and 167 assists to pace the Saints.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints have won two of their last three matches entering the week following a four-set victory over Indiana-South Bend on Saturday. Aquinas travels to Davenport and hosts Indiana Tech before entertaining Lourdes. Cammy Means has a team high 59 kills while Anna Fencil has tallied a team-best 69 digs. Brooke Wieland has handed out 179 assists and Michaela Ryan has a team-leading 17 blocks.
Best Start Ever: Lourdes 6-0 record is its best start to a season in program history. The Gray Wolves previous best mark was 4-2, accomplished three times in the first five years of the program's existence. In addition, the six-match winning streak matches the longest in program history. Lourdes also won six matches in a row from Nov. 2-16, 2013.
One of the Remaining Unbeatens: Lourdes enters the week one of just 13 undefeated teams remaining in NAIA. There are four programs with 9-0 records and two more with 8-0 marks that are better than the Gray Wolves' 6-0 record.
Spreading Around the Offense: Lourdes has five players averaging 1.83 kills per set or higher this season. In addition, five players are hitting better than .275 with at least 35 attempts on the year. As a team, the Gray Wolves are swinging at a .291 clip on the season and tallying 13.29 kills per set through the first six matches.
Winning the Service Battle: Lourdes tallied 24 service aces in two matches last week and now have recorded 63 aces on the season. The Gray Wolves have surrendered just 12 total aces defensively all year long, allowing just one in the two contests last year. In fact,
Lexie Curtis' 19 aces are seven more than the Lourdes opposition.
Record Book Watching: Michi Jimenez already holds the school's career digs record with 1,648, 925 more than any other player in a Gray Wolf uniform. She also holds the school mark for sets played (372), and is second in matches played with 103, just three shy of Ali Mass' (2010-2013) career mark of 106 matches.
Richards Sets Kills Record: Stephanie Richards became Lourdes career kills leader alone last Saturday with her 11 kills against Spring Arbor. She now has 721 for her career, surpassing Ali Mass' (2010-2013) record of 710. Â
More Record Book Info: Stef Comte holds the school's career blocks record with 176.Â
Lexie Curtis ranks third with 959 career assists, trailing second place Allegra Recknagel (2012-2013) by 330 helpers. Curtis is also tied with Hannah Thompson (2010-2011) for the all-time service aces record with 81 aces.
