Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball:Â Riding an 11-match winning streak, and having won 15 of the last 16 overall, 10th-ranked Lourdes continues Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play this week, traveling to Siena Heights on Wednesday evening to battle the Saints.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his seventh season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 134-90 (.598) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his eighth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 153-125 (.550) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history and was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2015.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 9-6 all-time advantage over Siena Heights dating back to Sept. 10, 2010 after defeating the Saints in straight sets on Sept. 7 at the Ebeid Recreation Center. The Gray Wolves have won three straight matches against Siena Heights overall. The Saints hold a 4-2 series edge in matches played in Adrian, Mich. after a four-set victory over Lourdes in 2014.
Earlier This Season: Lourdes hit .265 as a team and outblocked Siena Heights 7-2 on Sept. 7 at the Ebeid Recreation Center on the way to a 25-14, 25-17, 25-18 victory over the Saints.Â
Genessee Tate hit .556 with 11 kills while
Stephanie Ruffing added 10 kills.Â
Angelica Dippold tallied a team-high 16 digs for the Gray Wolves. Paige Hudgin led the Saints with 12 kills and hit .278 while Gabrielle Kalugar registered 24 digs.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes continued its dominance at home last Wednesday as the Gray Wolves swept Davenport 25-20, 25-20, 25-17.Â
Molly Shonk hit .317 with 17 kills and 15 digs while
Ave Stout hit .636.Â
Angelica Dippold tallied a match-high 19 digs. The Gray Wolves added another sweep on Friday, downing Northwestern Ohio 25-18, 25-10, 25-19 on the road.Â
Stephanie Ruffing hit .407 with 13 kills while
Molly Shonk swung at a .524 clip with 12 kills while adding 21 digs.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have won four consecutive matches after a 3-0 sweep at home against Spring Arbor on Monday evening. Paige Hudgin leads Siena Heights with 247 and is hitting .264 while Amanda Metz has handed out a team-high 636 assists and also leads the Saints with 21 service aces. Defensively, Gabrielle Kalugar leads Siena Heights with 318 digs while Taylor Purcell has recorded a team-high 61 blocks.
Nearly a Clean Sweep: Through 10 conference matches this season, Lourdes has been nearly flawless. The Gray Wolves have dropped just two total sets to WHAC foes, being forced to four sets on the road at Lawrence Tech and Aquinas. Overall the Gray Wolves have won 33 of their last 35 sets since league play began on Sept. 7.
WHAC Win Streak Continues: Lourdes has won 33 consecutive regular season conference matches, a streak that began Nov. 5, 2014 with a four-set triumph at Indiana Tech. Beginning Sept. 2, 2015 at Marygrove, the Gray Wolves have also won 35 straight contests overall against WHAC foes including the conference tournament.
WHAC Honors: Meghan Birr was named the WHAC Setter of the Week and
Molly Shonk earned WHAC Defender of the Week accolades after the Gray Wolves swept Davenport and Northwestern Ohio last week. Birr handed out 13.33 assists per set on the week while adding 1.67 digs per set. She also quarterbacked a Lourdes offense which hit at a .288 clip. Shonk tallied 6.00 digs per set while adding 4.83 kills per set and hit .387 for the Gray Wolves.
Dippold Tallies Career High: Angelica Dippold registered a career-high 19 digs last Wednesday in the victory over Davenport. The freshman has tallied double figure dig totals in nine matches during her rookie campaign.
Stout Dominating WHAC Competition: Ave Stout is hitting .529 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play this season. The Gray Wolf senior has recorded 80 kills in the 10 matches, averaging 2.50 kills per set. In addition, she has 31 total blocks (0.97/set) of league foes, including 11 solo rejections.
Home Sweet Home: Lourdes has enjoyed its new home, the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center thus far this season. The Gray Wolves have posted a 6-0 record in the new facility, and are a perfect 18-for-18 winning sets. In fact, the Gray Wolves have not even been extended to extra points in any set at home this year.
WHAC Tourney Berth Solidified: With six conference matches remaining, Lourdes has already solidified a spot in next month's WHAC tournament. The two division winners and the next six best records earn berths in the eight-team field. The Gray Wolves can finish no worse than seventh, but have their sites on a top seed and hosting the semifinal and championship matches.
Among the Nation's Best: Lourdes ranks ninth in all of NAIA hitting .261 as a team this season while the Gray Wolves are 11th averaging 13.49 kills per set. Lourdes is also 12th nationally handing out 12.41 assists per stanza and the Gray Wolves are 36th tallying 1.87 service aces per set. Individually,
Meghan Birr ranks 17th in the NAIA handing out 10.46 assists per set.
