Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Having won nine consecutive matches, and 13 of its last 14 overall, 12th-ranked Lourdes returns to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play this week to begin the second half of league play. The Gray Wolves host Davenport on Wednesday evening before traveling south to battle Northwestern Ohio on Friday night.
On the Air: Wednesday's match against Davenport will be broadcast tape-delayed on BCSN on Buckeye Cablesystem. The game will air on BCSN at 1:30 a.m. as well as noon on Thursday. In addition, BCSN2 will show the match on Wednesday night at 11:30 p.m., Thursday at 7 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., Friday at 12:30 p.m., and Saturday at 11:30 p.m.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his seventh season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 132-90 (.595) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his eighth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 151-125 (.547) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history and was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2015.
Series Notes: Davenport holds an 8-3 series edge dating back to Sept. 2, 2011, but the Gray Wolves swept the season series from the Panthers in 2015. Lourdes won in four sets in Grand Rapids, Mich. and posted a 3-0 sweep at Tam-o-Shanter. Davenport posted a 3-1 mark against the Gray Wolves at Tam-o-Shanter. Northwestern Ohio holds a 8-3 series advantage dating back to Oct. 2, 2010. The Gray Wolves won all three matches last season though, all sweeps, including a victory in the quarterfinals of the WHAC tournament. The Racers hold a 3-1 advantage all-time in matches held in Lima, Ohio.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened the week on the road last Wednesday, registering a 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 victory at Aquinas.Â
Stephanie Ruffing had 14 kills and 19 digs while
Molly Shonk tallied 13 kills and added 22 digs in the victory. On Friday, the Gray Wolves returned home to score a 25-23, 25-17, 25-11 win over Indiana Tech. Shonk had a team-high nine kills and
Angelica Dippold tallied 14 digs. Lourdes stepped out of conference on Saturday evening, defeating Bethel (Ind.) 25-15, 25-16, 25-21 at home. Shonk had 14 kills and 15 digs while also adding six aces.
Scouting Davenport: The Panthers enter the week having won three straight matches after defeating Marygrove at home in straight sets on Saturday. Krissy Dill leads Davenport with 257 kills and 29 service aces while Sydney Tracer has handed out 504 assists. Defensively, Kasey Stehouwer has tallied 309 digs and Ashley VanderHorst has recorded a team-high 61 blocks.
Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers enter the week having dropped four of their last five matches after being swept at Siena Heights on Friday. Northwestern Ohio hosts Indiana Tech on Wednesday before entertaining Lourdes. Leah Hofmann leads the Racers with 197 kills on the year while Kayleigh Hulst has handed out 608 assists and has recorded 27 service aces. Louise Back has a team-leading 274 digs while Stephanie Hanewold has blocked 88 balls.
Home Sweet Home: Lourdes has enjoyed its new home, the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center thus far this season. The Gray Wolves have posted a 5-0 record in the new facility, and are a perfect 15-for-15 winning sets. In fact, the Gray Wolves have not even been extended to extra points in any set at home this year.
Reitz Wins #150: Head coach
Greg Reitz tallied his 150th career coaching victory on the women's side on Friday evening with the three-set win over Indiana Tech. Reitz is 151-125 as a women's coach in eight seasons, with 132 of the victories coming at Lourdes over the last seven years.
Serving Up Aces: Lourdes recorded a season-high 13 service aces on Saturday evening against Bethel (Ind.), tying the fifth highest total for the Gray Wolves in a match in program history.Â
Molly Shonk delivered six of the aces herself, a season high for a Lourdes player, tying her for fourth most in a match all-time in program history.
WHAC Win Streak Continues: Lourdes has won 31 consecutive regular season conference matches, a streak that began Nov. 5, 2014 with a four-set triumph at Indiana Tech. Beginning Sept. 2, 2015 at Marygrove, the Gray Wolves have also won 33 straight contests overall against WHAC foes including the conference tournament.
Double Trouble: Stephanie Ruffing and
Molly Shonk both registered double-doubles last Wednesday at Aquinas and Shonk added another Saturday against Bethel (Ind.). Ruffing finished the Aquinas match with 14 kills and 19 digs while Shonk had 13 kills and 22 digs. Shonk then tallied 14 kills and 15 digs in the win over Bethel. Shonk now has six double-doubles on the year while Ruffing has tallied five.
Among the Nation's Best: Lourdes ranks 12th in all of NAIA hitting .258 as a team this season while the Gray Wolves are 14th averaging 13.35 kills per set. Lourdes is also 16th nationally handing out 12.25 assists per stanza and the Gray Wolves are 28th tallying 1.98 service aces per set. Individually,
Meghan Birr ranks 24th in the NAIA handing out 10.16 assists per set, and her 579 total assists are 49th most.
