Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season opens on Saturday afternoon for Lourdes as the Gray Wolves entertain Davenport at Wildcat Stadium. The Gray Wolves finished in a tie for sixth place in their inaugural 2015 season and look to move up the ladder this year.
Head Coach Jackie Donovan: In her second season on the Lourdes bench,
Jackie Donovan has an 10-12-2 (.458) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes leads the all-time series against Davenport 1-0 after notching a 1-0 victory Sept. 26, 2015 in Grand Rapids, Mich.Â
Jada Foster scored the match-winner with 2:04 to play before halftime and
Erika Brinkman made four saves to earn the shutout in goal. Saturday will mark the Panthers' first trip to Wildcat Stadium.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Taylor scored a pair of first half goals just 2:30 apart on Tuesday evening as the Trojans defeated the Gray Wolves 2-0 in Upland, Ind.Â
Kiley Transit made eight saves in the loss for Lourdes, but the Gray Wolves were limited to just four total shot attempts offensively. On Saturday,
Lana Bell score early in the second half to give the Gray Wolves the lead but Rochester (Mich.) tied the match with 15:49 remaining in regulation as the two schools batted to a 1-1 draw in double overtime. Transit made three stops for Lourdes and the Gray Wolves outshot the Warriors 18-9 in the home contest.
Scouting Davenport: The Panthers enter the week having won five straight contests following a 2-0 victory over Grace at home last Thursday afternoon. Davenport hosts Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday evening before heading to Lourdes for the WHAC opener. Shameeka Fishley leads Davenport with 16 points this season, having scored seven times while adding two assists. Katherine Steiner and Halie Farrell each have four goals on the year and have tallied 10 and nine points respectively. In goal, Amy Corcoran and Regan Troff has split time. Corcoran has not allowed a goal in 270 minutes while Troff has surrendered just one in 290 minutes.
WHAC Openers: Saturday's match marks the first time the Gray Wolves have opened the WHAC schedule at home. Lourdes was victorious in its only previous conference opener, having defeated Davenport on the road 1-0 to begin the 2015 campaign.
Fit to Be Tied: Lourdes only has played to a 110-minute draw twice in program's history. Both times the Gray Wolves have tied Rochester (Mich.) after the two sides were deadlocked at 1-1 on Saturday. Last year Lourdes and the Warriors opened the season with a scoreless deadlock.
Among the NAIA Leaders: Lourdes ranks 49th in all of the NAIA averaging 2.67 goals per match this season. The Gray Wolves have found the back of the net 16 times already in 2016 after tallying just 15 total goals during the inaugural 2015 campaign.
Bells Shots Find the Target: Lana Bell has made the most of her shot opportunities this season. The sophomore has taken just four of them, but three of them have been on goal. Two of the three shots on frame have found the back of the net after her blast from 30 yards out put the Gray Wolves in front 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Ciarlino Continues to Hold Scoring Lead: Freshman
Clare Ciarlino continues to lead the Gray Wolves offensively through the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Lourdes rookie has scored five times and added two assists for 12 total points. She is two goals, one assist, and two points shy of tying the school's single season record in each of the three categories.
Transit Steady in Goal: Kiley Transit has played all but 45 minutes between the posts this season for the Gray Wolves. The redshirt-freshman sports a 1.55 goals against average and a .750 save percentage in her nearly 523 minutes of action. She also has tallied one shutout and been involved in the team's other clean sheet.
Mixing Up the Lineup: Lourdes has had 16 different players draw at least one starting assignment already this season. In fact, only
Kiley Transit,
Clare Ciarlino,
Halee Roberts,
Tori Koontz, and
Karlie O'Keefe have been on the pitch to begin all six matches. In addition, only a total of 12 players have stepped onto the field in all 12 contests.
Captains Named: Remy Houttekier,
Tara Blundell,
Kendyl Christian, and
Hayley Wagner are serving as the team's captains for the 2016 season. Houttekier is in her second season serving in the leadership role while Blundell, Christian, and Wagner are in year one.
This and That: Lourdes has never won an overtime contest in program history, going 0-3-2 when playing more than 90 minutes after the draw with Rochester (Mich.) on Saturday ... eight different players have scored this year and 11 different players have at least one point ... the Gray Wolves are outshooting their opponents 97-67 on the season, including a 53-38 edge on target ... Lourdes has seen its opponents win 10 more corner kick opportunities (32-22) this year.
