Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: After six seasons of playing at Tam-o-Shanter, Lourdes finally opens its own on-campus facility, the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center, hosting Siena Heights on Wednesday and Aquinas on Friday to begin Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his seventh season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 123-90 (.577) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his eighth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 143-125 (.534) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history and was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2015.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds an 8-6 series advantage against Siena Heights dating back to Sept. 10, 2010. The Gray Wolves won both of last year's meetings, downing the Saints in four sets at home and sweeping Siena Heights in Dearborn, Mich. Lourdes was 4-2 against Siena Heights at Tam-o-Shanter. Aquinas holds a 5-2 series edge dating back to Oct. 7, 2011. The Gray Wolves finally defeated the Saints for the first two times ever last year, winning in five sets in Grand Rapids, Mich. before sweeping Aquinas at home.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened the weekend at the Hampton Inn Volleyball Classic with a four-set victory over Olivet Nazarene on Friday before sweeping top-ranked, and tournament host, Columbia (Mo.).Â
Stephanie Ruffing had 20 kills and 15 digs while hitting .500 in the first match while
Molly Shonk tallied 14 kills and 11 digs in the upset of the Cougars. On Saturday, Ruffing had 16 kills as Lourdes defeated No. 2 Missouri Baptist in four sets before the Gray Wolves fell to No. 12 Park in four sets despite 14 kills and 18 digs from Ruffing.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have won six of their last seven matches after defeating Lawrence Tech and Rio Grande on Saturday at the Point Park tournament. Paige Hudgin leads Siena Heights with 82 kills and is hitting .299 while Amanda Metz has handed out 231 assists. Gabrielle Kalugar has recorded a team-leading 95 digs for the Saints while Taylor Purcell has blocked 20 balls.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints remain unbeaten on the 2016 campaign after a five-set victory on the road at Indiana-South Bend last Thursday evening. Aquinas hosts Concordia (Mich.) on Wednesday before heading to Lourdes. Micaela Hazen leads Aquinas with 57 kills and is hitting .256 this season while Brooke Wieland has handed out 133 assists. Defensively, Katlyn Agren has registered 60 digs for the Saints while Dayle Wood leads Aquinas with 11 blocks.
Birr Earns National Honors: Meghan Birr was named the NAIA National Setter of the Week for her role in Lourdes' 3-1 weekend in Missouri. The senior averaged 9.60 assists per set and added 1.80 digs per set over four contests while leading Lourdes to a .240 hitting percentage as the Gray Wolves faced three top-12 teams in four matches.
WHAC Honors: Meghan Birr was also named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Setter of the Week while
Stephanie Ruffing was the WHAC Attacker of the Week. Ruffing averaged 3.80 kills per set while hitting .266 in the four matches. She added 3.13 digs per set as well.
All-Tournament Team: Stephanie Ruffing was named to the Hampton Inn Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team alongside
Ave Stout. Stout hit .260 while averaging 2.13 kills per set for the Gray Wolves. The senior also had 13 blocks, averaging a team-high 0.87 per set.
WHAC Openers: Lourdes is 2-3 all-time in WHAC openers, having defeated Marygrove in first conference match each of the last two seasons.
Home Openers: Lourdes went 5-1 in its home openers while at Tam-o-Shanter, winning each of the last three. Last year, the Gray Wolves opened their home campaign with a 3-0 victory over Spring Arbor.
Downing No. 1 and No. 2: Lourdes defeated top-ranked Columbia (Mo.) and second-ranked Missouri Baptist within 16 hours of one another. The wins, obviously, mark the highest ranked teams the Gray Wolves have ever defeated. Prior to this past weekend, the highest ranked team Lourdes had ever defeated was ninth-ranked Madonna on Oct. 4, 2014. All-time, Lourdes is now 10-20 against top-25 opponents.
Early Success at Libero: Freshman
Angelica Dippold has grasped the libero role for the Gray Wolves already this year. She is averaging 3.19 digs per set, and has played in all but one stanza thus far this year. Over the weekend, she tallied 13 or more digs in three of the four matches.
Birr Holds Assist Record: Meghan Birr has shattered the school's career assist record in just over one season, having handed out 1,639 helpers, including 271 this year. She has registered 188 more than Hannah Thompson (2010-2011) did during the program's first two seasons.
More Records: Lexie Curtis is the school's career service ace record holder with 127, 46 more than Hannah Thompson's second place mark.Â
Stef Comte has recorded 261 blocks in her career, and holds the school mark by 123 over Andrea Brown (2012-2013) after tallying 14 already this season.
This and That: Stephanie Richards, the school record holder for career kills is 20 shy of 1,000 for her career ... Lourdes has not been extended to a fifth set since Oct. 17, 2015, a victory over No. 22 Madonna ... the Gray Wolves hit a season-high .331 in the victory over Olivet Nazarene ...
