Match #23: Wednesday, October 1, 7 p.m. EDT
vs. Siena Heights (17-2, 7-1 WHAC)
Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center - Sylvania, Ohio
Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: After having its five-match winning streak snapped on Saturday evening, Lourdes University looks to begin a new one this week, playing just one match. The Gray Wolves host Siena Heights on Wednesday evening to begin the stretch run, as all seven remaining contests are within the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his eighth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 160-101 (.613) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his ninth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 180-136 (.570) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history and was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2015.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 10-7 all-time advantage against Siena Heights in a series that dates back to Dec. 10, 2010. The Saints snapped the Gray Wolves' four-match win streak in the series earlier this season on Sept. 6 in Adrian, Mich. with a straight sets triumph. Lourdes is 5-2 all-time at home against Siena Heights, including a win last year in the only previous contest inside of the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Three players tallied double figure kill totals on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves swept Rochester (Mich.) 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 in Rochester Hills, Mich.Â
Emily Arnold led the way with 13 kills and hit .407 while defensively
Angelica Dippold tallied 20 digs. Lourdes extended its winning streak to five on Friday night with a 25-18, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20 victory over Northwestern Ohio at home.Â
Tylar Roberson registered 21 kills while hitting .356 and added 17 digs in the triumph to lead the way for the Gray Wolves. The win streak came to an end on Saturday as 25th-ranked Marian swept Lourdes 25-20, 25-12, 25-23 in Indianapolis, Ind.Â
Genessee Tate had a team-leading six kills in two sets while Dippold tallied 14 digs.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints head to Lourdes having won three straight matches after defeating Indiana Tech in four sets on Friday night at home. Paige Hudgin leads Siena Heights with 179 kills on the season while adding a team-high 21 service aces. Elizabeth Breton is hitting a team-leading .282 with 143 kills with Amanda Metz has handed out 619 assists. Defensively, Gabby Kalugar leads the Saints with 417 digs on the year while Breton has registered 70 blocks.
WHAC Race Heating Up: With the midway point of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season passing, the race for seeding in the league tournament is in full force. The two division winners will be seeded one and two and earn a bye straight to the semifinals, with the next six teams, based upon overall record, filling out the tournament field. The third and fourth seeds will earn one bye and host a quarterfinal with the fifth and sixth seeds hosting seven and eight in the opening round.
Roberson Tallies 21 Kills: Tylar Roberson became the first Gray Wolf to register 20 or more kills in a match this season, putting down 21 balls against Northwestern Ohio last Friday evening. The freshman's total is the fifth highest kill mark for a four-set match in program history.
Markus Matches School Mark: Jami Markus tied the school's single match record for assists in a three-set contest with her effort against Rochester (Mich.) last Wednesday. The redshirt-freshman setter handed out 42 helpers in the three sets, matching
Meghan Birr's school record, set against Taylor on Oct. 28, 2016. Markus also posted the fifth-highest four-match assists total on Friday against Northwestern Ohio, handing out 51 assists in the win.
Spreading Out Offensive Production: Lourdes had three players post double figure kill totals twice last week, doing so against both Rochester (Mich.) and Northwestern Ohio. The Gray Wolves had spread the offense out in that manner just once through the first 19 matches, as three players had 10 or more kills against Indiana-Kokomo on Aug. 26.
Arnold Plays Defense: Emily Arnold matched a team-high with eight blocks on Friday evening against Northwestern Ohio, the third time she has rejected eight balls in a match this season. That total matches a team-high with
Cierra Martinez, who had eight blocks against Cincinnati Christian (Aug. 26). Arnold has seven of the team's top eight block totals for a match this year.
Jumping in Front Leads to Success: All 15 of Lourdes' victories this season have come when the Gray Wolves won the opening set. Lourdes is 15-1 in such situations this year, with the lone loss coming to Saint Xavier. The Gray Wolves have yet to rally from a first set loss to come back and win a match.
Among the Nation's Leaders: Emily Arnold is 12th among all NAIA players averaging 1.21 blocks per set and is also 12th with 92 total blocks on the year.Â
Angelica Dippold ranks 14th nationally tallying 5.71 digs per set. As a team, Lourdes is 21st in the country averaging 18.24 digs per set and 34th registering 2.11 blocks per set.
Home Sweet Home: Lourdes had its 30-match home court win streak snapped on Sept. 23 against Saint Xavier, a string that dated back to the end of the 2013 season. The loss to the Cougars was also the first ever inside of the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center. The Gray Wolves have won two straight at home since then though, and are now 16-1 all-time inside the facility.
This and That: Emily Arnold is the only Gray Wolf to appear in all 76 sets this season ...
Kristin Murrell and
Tylar Roberson each had two double-doubles last week, giving Murrell a team-leading 10 on the year and Roberson three as a rookie ... after this week, Lourdes has just two home matches remaining on the schedule.
